My Car: 2004 Prius Package: #6 Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | Cobrakid - If you read my post, I did not insult the NAV. I said that it has some glitches but that most of the people who have it are happy with it. But I also pointed out that it is very expensive. Each individual must decide for him- herself whether it's worth the cost. If you are going $20,000 into debt to buy this car, do you really want to go another few thousand dollars into debt to get NAV? For some people NAV will be a very important feature, and even a safety feature: If you frequently drive where you do not know the roads, NAV is a useful tool. But if you know where you're going, NAV is a toy. For myself, I'm a control freak. I want to decide which route I take. When I drove to Iowa City, the Yahoo Maps router wanted to send me through Minneapolis, but I prefered to avoid the traffic and go through Sioux Falls. Here at home, sometimes I want to take the faster route, but sometimes I want to take the route with less traffic. I know my way around Fargo and I don't need NAV. I would have taken a #9 just to get the car sooner, but I've got money to burn. I sure would not have gone into debt for it. A character from a Dickens novel says that the recipe for happiness is to spend one pound less than your income, and the recipe for misery is to spend one pound more than your income. People go into debt to buy things they don't need with money they don't have, and then they don't have any money for things they need. People used to have savings. Now they have debt. Debt causes ulcers, heart attacks, and divorces. Sassafrass needs to decide for herself whether (1) the NAV will be a useful tool or a toy; and (2) whether she can afford it or would rather have the money for something else. Her original post says she does not want it and does not want to pay for it. (Same for Bluetooth.) I'm not trying to make the decision for her, as everyone else here is. I'm trying to help her clarify the questions she has to ask herself: how badly she wants the car; how she feels about waiting; and how much the price difference means to her. I never insulted NAV. I pointed out that not everyone needs or wants it. For some it's an important feature. For some it's an expensive toy. And for some it's an affordable toy. Back to Sassafrass: What you have to decide is, do you want to spend a lot of money for features you don't really want, in order to get this car sooner? This is a really cool car, and you're going to love it, no matter which options package you get. But only you can decide for yourself whether it's worth the extra money to eliminate further waiting.

The only thing I would be betting on would be the inflation adjustment, since not adjusting for that would essentially be lowering the price of the car. |

My Car: Package: Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | Thanks for all your good advice, folks! I just talked to the dealer and it turns out that the car isn't even the color I wanted. So, I'm passing on it. He did say that production on the 2005 starts August 14 and that the first 2005s will be "landing" in the U.S. on September 17, so, while I'll have to wait a little while, I'll probably be getting a 2005. Hopefully there will be some good upgrades. Of course, who knows what the packages will be...I may have to make some more decisions. |
