Ok, with the high digressing of the whole static electricity debacle I'll try to get this back on track.

The past several times I've filled up, if it's warm enough to do this, I will just set the car in N and put on the parking brake to fill up. Of course I make sure the engine isn't running. While in N the engine won't start if it's off. The engine way cut off if it's on though. I've been told that it won't, but I know that in my '02 Prius that it will.

Why don't you just put the car in Park? Someone pointed out that IF (pretty big if) the parking brake fails, the Prius could roll away if you're in neutral.

What do you mean by "dark intersections?"

If the lights are out (dark) then the light isn't red. If no lights are working, then you would have to exercise extreme caution and proceed only when safe to do so.

If you mean the light is red and you run it, please post your plate number for the authorities. I don't appreciate red-light runners.

He can come to my town and try that. The local police department will send him a nice 5X7 and a bill for $371.00.

The reason is because the engine can turn on while you are in park mode. BTW, it's not like we set the car on a steep hill while we are refueling or have the pump hose stretched out all the way. If the car should happen to have the parking brake fail it'd starting rolling very slowly, if at all, and I'd either lean on the car to stop it from moving, or go in and hold the brake pedal down.

He's stupid enough to run dark intersections, so who knows. Besides, The Man seems to have anticipated that possibility: locally at least the red light cams have flash units to ensure that they get a well-lighted image of the plate.

It's also illegal to run a red light, but I regularly do it in dark intersections.

I think you may be mistaken; this is the Prius forum. The Hummer forum is over there -->

I managed a gas station in college and a liitle after and the whole risk of explosion is very overblown, but legitimate for liability reasons.
I've seen MANY people drive away with the nozzle still in (myself included once). It's not a problem. Usually it pops out harmlessly. Worst case, there is a linkgage designed to disconnect and stop fuel from going everywhere. Then you have to install a new nozzle and hose.

The main benefit to gas stations for this law is to reduce/hamper drive-offs, not to reduce explosions. How many cell phone, or running engine related gas station explosions have you heard of? Personally, I've heard of none. Car engine compartment fires are much more common and have nothing to do with any of this.
