I personally don't think you've got a chance of making that deal but your best bet would be to find the Dealer with the most cars (Prius) on the lot and be ready to be flexible with your color choice. The Dealers in this area are watching each other closely and all it will take is about another 25 cents a gallon on gas and you will see these cas selling at MSRP or above very soon. When I was looking to by I had one Dealer suggest that by mid-summer they may be asking for sticker plus for any Prius on the lot.

I found the Consumer Reports car facts to be very helpful and well worth the $14 or so dollars I spent. It gave me information that Edmunds did not (e.g. invoice price on the package) and allowed me to quote those numbers to the dealers during negotiation. I knew exactly what profit the dealer was making.
[/b]
(Thread starter here, again) Neat. I had all that info too. I found a dinky little site: http://www.intellichoice.com/reports/vehic...07/Toyota/Prius

The info is outdated from the recent discount i spoke of in the commercial, but it's OH so useful.

I own a Sidekick 3 phone (or PDA, if you will) and it has internet everywhere. I have that page bookmarked, the idea is to reference it when I need it.. I love it. Even on the (relative to a computer) small screen, it's beautifully perfect.

Alright all. It seems you are all reason, and I shall be open. I will look for invoice. Alot of this sounds like cash is not a big deal at all.

It seems like I should shoot for invoice and hope for the best.. then go through the five dealerships in my zipcode area and play them against each other (which means, what, by the way, get quote, take to other dealer, get them to lower, rinse repeat?), and go for the best I can get? So far the 5% above invoice was the offer i got over phone. I even got a call (what does that mean..?) from one of the dealers i called about the colors they had and they asked if i still wanted the car and what color.. so does that mean they're desperate to sell them now? Hm?

To the guy with the wife as a dealer.... love some tips!!!! Throw any around you could..? Maybe? :]

Thank you all again! This is all wonderful. I could never get enough advice. The more diverse, the better for making choices.

The dealers/sales people will all call you back. I was looking at CRVs and there were few on lots anywhere. They wanted top dollar and told me they were getting it. They are all calling me and emailing me, and gues what the prices are getting better.

Get some Internet quotes from the different dealers. Call and ask for the Internet sales Manager. Get them to email you the quote Out the door Price, including all taxes, fees.

Then you can compare your quotes. There is a lot of good info on this site.

The dealer gets his money quickly enough with financing that they don't really care whether you finance or pay in full. Even if they didn't make a few bucks on the loan origination, they don't care. Certainly the salesman doesn't care.

And, chinalfr2, when he said "cash," he didn't say "a big bag full of money." The term "cash" can also mean "payment in full at once."

Maybe everyone in Boston is as loopy as the Keystone Kops?
[/b]

In Mass. cash means cash. Any cash transaction over 10,000.00 causes all kinds of paperwork due to the Patriot Act now. They take terrorism very seriously around here and dealing in cash (not check) draws lots of attention. Call us loopy if you want, but it's hard to forget that one of the 911 flights originated in Boston and I think it changed a lot of thinking around here.

paying cash or writing a check usually doesn't give you any extra negotiating power. You're young and will be taken advantage of, I'm serious. I sell cars (toyotas). I'm also 22, and know how hard it is to get financed. Do you have any vehicle to trade with the dealership? If so, you may reach your goal if it's worth enough. Otherwise, I'm afraid you may have to find more money, or finance the difference. The promotion you heard about/saw on TV isn't because Toyota's trying to sell off all the Prii, but rather because they are now widely available without waiting lists. There are no rebates on package 5 at the moment, either. There is, however, a 300 dollar dealer holdback in addition to the MSRP discount.

I hope that helps.
[/b]
Although there technically is no "rebate" in place on Prius models, Toyota has cut the price of option packages from $600 to $2000 depending on package. This discount takes the place of their low finance offer which expired in March.

I bought my Prius (package #5) last month primarily due to the option package discount. I was originally looking to upgrade my '06 model in January, but the numbers did not make sense. But with another $2000 discount, it was definitely worth it!

So although technically there is no "rebate" on the Prius, the $2000 discount will work out just fine!

I agree that cash is not the same as a check. I have had no problems buying a car with a personal check. Cash transactions of $10,000 or more need to be reported. (Not sure exactly when this started.) When negotiating for the lowest price possible remember that time is money. The amount should be agreed to in your e-mails. You shouldn't be at the dealer more than an hour. Nobody is going to want to spend time completing extra forms if they aren't making much money on the car. Leave your money in the bank. Take your checkbook.

My $20740 was with no obligation for financing or extended warranty, or service contract, or anything like that.

So the dealer LOST $1350 on the vehicle but probably earned $ from Toyota on number of cars sold.

The dealer definitely earns by selling so many vehicles at MSRP price from uninformed customers.
[/b]
Invoice on your car is $21039. That's $299.00 he would have lost. But he really re-couped more than that just in Holdback. He didn't lose anything. Where did you get $1350?

I mentioned that someone on the internet was looking to buy a Prius at invoice or less. My wife's comment (after a a little giggle), was that three weeks ago her dealer would have made a deal... Now with gas prices rapidly climbing they only have four left in inventory and she had sold three this week at regular markup.

She did say the key is the end of the month and the end of the quarters as dealers need to "make their numbers" to get their bonus levels so the last two selling days of each month are the best to make deals in general. Of course there are always dealers than need to make inventory floorplan payments and if sales are slow and you can find out which ones need the sales, you can target them as well.

Basically, when gas prices go up over three bucks sales of hybrids skyrocket. When they drop people buy less efficient vehicles. At least that is what they do in our area...

Heh, not me.

Yesterday took delivery of my 2007 Prius
Package 6, magnetic gray, non-touring, obviously all the bells and whistles

$24,847
+ 165 doc fee
-----------------
$25,012

State tax, title, registration, etc. totaled $1,357.35

Total: $26,369.35

Seeing what others have paid for their Prius, I did very well. But then again, there is a package discount from Toyota now and Boston may have better bargains than other parts of the US.
