I briefly test drove today a 1996 Prius (Package #6) with 10,820 miles. It is at a Toyota dealership listed for $21,988. I've checked out Kelly's and Edmunds; overall, is this a great deal or is there room for negotiation?

Also, what protection/assurance does a Certified status have? This vehicle currently is not noted as having this; should I push for that certification during negotiations?

Tomorrow I am going for a second test drive. Any feedback would be appreciated.

assuming this is a 2006 pkg #6, according to kbb.com this kinda sounds too good to be true. they list the used car dealer price] $25890. you should ask explicitly if the vehicle has been in an accident, flood, etc. at 10,820, you should see if they would throw in say the first 50k prepaid maintenance and/or extended bumper to bumper warranty to 100k. is it really a pkg 6? i would also asky why a toyota dealer has not given it certified status.

God bless Google - I located the Carfax report. It states the car was in an accident with damage being rated as moderate to severe. Aren't sellers required to disclose this information or am I just that (whew! nearly) gullible?

don't know if they are required to disclose this to you, but it does appear they have discounted the car to reflect its history. the big question is what is the car really worth given its history AND is there any long term uncorrected damage to the car.

you should consider for another $6k or so more do you find a new '07 pkg 6??

btw, you weren't gullible. you did check the facts before buying.

good luck.

I had a Camry many years ago that I discovered too late had been "salvaged". Now, when looking for cars, I get a monthly subscription to Carfax and use it thoroughly. Worth every penny and has kept me from some bad decisions.
