Without reservation I agree with the premise of your post. It is my belief that although you question the reasoning of those who screw around with safety features I'm convinced you already knew the answers before you posted. I even knew this old gaffer who took the batteries out of his smoke alarm 'cause it kept blasting off whenever he made toast in the A.M. Well he's toast now. Just to prove your point I would ask that any Prius owner who gets killed or kills someone with their vehicle to please post here so we can keep tally.

None of the Navy flyers I flew with, drank coffee with and chatted with after mission-sorties ever opted to “exercise their personal choice” to disable-mute these “annoying” missile threat advisory-warning tone systems. At least none that ever returned to base or the ship to fight and fly another day along side me.

The back up beep is not sounding to warn me of an incoming missile designed to kill me, thank you. :P

BTW, disabling the beep for the seat belts DOESN'T disable the restraint system itself. And in my case that doesn't matter, because the system isn't protecting anything. The only thing that uses that seat without a belt on is my backback with books and a laptop. Therefore disabling the beep doesn't impact safety at all.

I disabled my reverse beep because it interfered with my abiliity to hear ambient noise around the vehicle.

I don't know about most of you, but sound plays a big part in my backup procedure (especially where visibility is limited). I listen for things like the engine of a car coming down a crowded parking lane, voices or the laughter of children, etc. I know there's a camera to help, but it is certainly not all-encompassing.

Without that sound feeddback, I felt like I was always trying to reverse on a whim. Didn't make me feel comfortable at all!

The nice thing about this whole topic is that we have a choice with the Prius. To beep or not to beep. That is the question we each get to answer in our own way. No one needs to suffer from cognitive dissonance due to the beeper

Actually I had one of these, the civilian model, in my last car. It had a mute function and an on/off switch. I used these functions according to the threat environment. So far I've made it back from every sortie. As for the rest of it, I believe that I own the car, I drive the car, and I should have some say about what goes on in the car. Also, I have tried and tried, but I have never had any real results with getting my dog to use the belt on the passenger side. So when I got tired of the little flashing seatbelt light I got rid of it. OK?
