My Car: Package: Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | I want to buy a used 2007 Prius from an owner in Oregon and register the car in California. I asked her to check the emissions plate but she doesn't understand what I am looking for. Does anyone know if all 2007 Prius sold in Oregon is compliant with California emission rules? Though it would be good to check before I have the car shipped to California. sloopG |

My Car: 2007 Prius Package: #4 Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 5 | Hmm... I thought California required any vehicles purchased out of state (whether 50 state or not) to be used, where used is defined as having 7500 miles or more. I know for a fact that a person who bought a new 50-state motorcycle in Florida was unable to register it here in California because of that requirement. If it were me, I would verify for sure that DMV will hold the Prius exempt from this requirement. If miles are greater than 7500 miles, I don't believe there should be a problem, regardless whether the vehicle is 50-state or not. |

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm I purchased my MINI out of state and had it delivered to California. All that was required to register the MINI was a SMOG test and a trip to the local DMV. Once the DMV inspected the car's emission compliance sticker to confirm conformance with California emissions standards and I paid them the taxes and license fees I left the DMV with plates and registration stickers. All told, it was about a 2 hour effort, starting with commencement of the SMOG test. | |

Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is: Hybrid 1975 year model or older Diesel powered Electric Natural gas powered and has a Gross Vehicle Weight rating of 14,001 lbs. or more. My Car: Package: Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTM Awards: 0 Friends: 0 | When I came back to Cali in 1994 if your car was not Cali certified they would ding you like 300 bucks per car. As a "smog impact fee" or some such. I had two non cali cars, ouch 600 bucks on top of all the other outrageous fees. I called a couple of wrecking yards, the radiator shrouds (where the cali sticker was then) were in hot demand, seems they were getting a couple of hundred for them, cuz they only look for the sticker. Fast forward a couple of years, Cali had to give all that money back, I got a check back, no interest of course. It seems they were asked to prove that the money they were collecting was going toward what it was intended for. Of course they could not, the money went directly to the general fund. At that time the cars had to have X miles on them b4 you could register in Cali. One of mine barely made it. That's the way I remember it anyway, don't know where things stand now. |
