Wow, my service department says the 2003 Prius has two types of starter battery. Replacing one would be just over $200. Replacing the other would be around $240. Can this be right? Anybody with other suggestions of what would work as well?

I am not sure about the 2003. It sounds like the electrical system differs from the 04-08? Your figures are so low, you must be referring to the low voltage battery(s)? The 2004-08 12 volt battery is basically the same as the Mazda Miata's. There is a good chance the 03 Prius can use a similar sealed and vented battery. I think the Miata battery lists for around $65.
