I plan to put down a deposit tomorrow on a 2008 Prius. Is the dealer going to try to sell me some more stuff in order to suck the maximum amount of money out of me? Is any of it going to be worth buying, or should I just say no to it all? If anyone can give me a rundown of what to expect, I'd appreciate it. I haven't bought a new car in a long, long time.

If you are interested in the Extended Warranty or Prepaid Service, then buy it through Prius Chat.
Discounted Toyota Prirus Extended Warranty

I am sure your dealer will be hard pressed to get you a price that beats the one you can get from Troy.

The dealer may try to sell you some add ons, depending on what Prius package you are purchasing. If you order the car with the package that includes the various items you really want, then other items you can add later if you Must have them, as aftermarket add ons.

For example, I've added mud flaps, bumper protector, engine block heater, all weather floor mats, and the like. All of these can be purchased from Prius Chat or from a Toyota parts department and installed yourself.

For items like the extended warranty or a pre-paid maintenance plan, I highly recommend you NOT purchase the pre-paid maintenance. The extended warranty can be purchased here for 1/2 to 3/4 off what your dealer will want for it.

Good luck!! Let us know how you enjoy your new spaceship!!

1- i was asked who i wanted as my beneficiary, next day i noticed $300+ added for insurance
2- never asked anything about window etch prot, $299
3- was told i had to buy extended warranty at time of purchase, total bull
i called dealer to cancel them and he faxed me a list, looked like their standard form with all the extras they can add, to be cancelled..he was nice enough to fill out the 3 above w/policy #'s for me to sign and thereby cancel...what about those who dont read these contracts..i guess they count on that

Spaceship? I thought I was buying a video game on wheels! You'll have to wait a while for my report, since they have to order one for me so I can get the color I want.

All went pretty smoothly. The only thing they tried to sell me was simonz system 5. I said "no, but I'll think about it." I was a little suspicious of it, since one of the things it included was Scotchguarding the interior. I thought, "couldn't I do that myself for like, $1?"

The interior is already treated with Toyota's own stuff, which is amazingly effective. Adding Scotchguard over that would be, in my opinion, like painting grass green.

But yes, you are right, that the treatment the dealer will do for several hundreds (?) of dollars probably costs them about a dollar to do. All of the dealer add-ons are worthless.

I did get mud flaps because I feel it's irresponsible to throw mud up at the windshield of the car behind you. But I regard those as an option, more than a "dealer add-on."

Now if you can get the dealer to add anything for free, go for it.

Depends on your dealer. There's not alot they can add. Wait on the warranty, watch doc fees.

I bought the usual add-ons from Prius Shop and Metro Toyota in Cleveland, OH

Mud flaps (require you to take off the rear tires to install), EV Switch (require taking apart the glove box and following directions), decals, center wheel cups, and rear bumper/step hard plastic protector. They ran upwards of $140. Mats came with the car.

the toyoguard is a fairly sophisticated process, i had it on an 03 rav4 and the int/ext looked like new when i sold it...not sure if its the same in your neck of the woods, but, no, you cant do it for like a $1. click the link belowto see the brief description

The only free thing a dealer will provide is their logo glued onto the hatch. Everything else gets paid for one way or another.
