You can remove the bulbs. Hobbit (may the hair on his feet grow ever longer) has a link describing the process.

MAybe this has nothing to do with this thresd but it just occured to me. If i'm not mistaken the 12v battery does not turn on the engine in the prius right? there is no starter correct? so if the 12v batt goes dead won't the car just drive on the traction battery and start teh ICE to charge the 12v? Or the 12v runs the power to the dash so the car won't even power up.. Just curious..

The 12 volt battery runs the control systems to allow the traction battery to power the car and start the engine. You can jump start a Prius from a 12 volt drill battery!!

Just FYI here... For those not so familiar with Hybrid systems.... The 12v battery supplies power to the normal systems (power windows, power locks, radio, etc.) when the system is not in "ready" mode. It's most important job, however, is to turn on the system main relays and basically "Boot Up" the ECUs and the Hybrid system. The HV battery then powers the drive system and turns the ICE when the computer decides to start it. The invertor/convertor then sends power back to the 12v battery to recharge it.

Wanna have some fun? Find a newbie parts guy and ask them for an alternator belt for a 2004 Prius, try to keep a straight face..... :P

oh you'd end up buying something... wanna know how many tries it took to get 5 correct seals for a 2vz-fe engine and a540e trans? THREE trips to parts. mostly no big deal since it was a 20 yard walk for DH at the time but THREE tries! the wrong axle seal we discovered after they closed, and it held us up for a day on the es250 project.
