Default Rented a Prius

The light for Maintenance Required is on. I traveled 76 miles and it says I averaged 45.6 mpg but looking at the consumption it never got under 50mpg. The big issue is after only 76 miles, it has already used up 3 blimps.

You rented a car that had the check engine light on?

The graph on the energy screen plots MPG (vertical, "y" axis) against time
(horizontal, "x" axis. You are probably thinking that its plotting MPG against
distance. A reasonable but incorrect assumption. I think that MPG against
time is a nearly meaningless measurement. See this thread for my take on
it:

MFD Energy Graph; MPG-H, A Better Way?

Some folks strongly disagree. You decide.

As to the pips on the "Guess Gauge," welcome to the world of uncertainty.
There are at least 5,743 threads about the frustration it creates. But don't
worry about the pips at the full tank end of the gauge, that's not where real
trouble lies.

BIG trouble lies at the other end, the approaching empty, or soon to be
empty, or oops! just went empty with one pip showing end. Of the 5,743
threads about the guess gauge, 5,742 are about what has happened, is
happening, or will happen if you run out of gas.

Nothing good can come from running out of gas. The smart folks
recommend that you fill 'er up at two pips. Again, you decide.

Maintenance Required light means it's almost time for an oil change. How many miles are on the odometer?

The maintenance required light is on not the check engine light. They are two different lights. The maintenance required light is to remind you to change the engine oil. Many people do not know how to reset the light when changing the engine oil.

give this to the rental place
  1. Turn the power switch IG-ON and make sure that the ODO/TRIP meter is displaying the odometer.
  2. Turn the power switch OFF.
  3. While pushing the ODO button, turn the power switch IG-ON.
  4. The reminder light will flash until the reset is completed.
  5. The reset is complete when the reminder light turns OFF. Release the ODO button.
  6. After the reset, the ODO/TRIP meter displays as a set of zeros for 1 second, then displays your normal odometer mileage.
