Default Oil Light -- Stupid Thing won't reset?

I Know I must be doing it wrong but have tried several times. Manual says to hold in trip/odo button, hit power, hold for more than five seconds and it is done.

Have done this several times and have not been able to turn off the maint. light. Any hints.....???

Hi Kristi,

You first must set the odometer so that the trip odometers are not showing, just the basic six-digit odometer. Then turn the car off.

Then hold down the trip/odometer button while turning the car to IG-ON, where the dashboard lights come on. Allow the odometer digits to change one by one, then the 5,000 mile MAINT REQD timer should be reset.

Just to be clear on Patrick's post...
The Odometer must NOT show Trip A or Trip B....
As you're holding the "ODO" button you must go into either IgOn (2 button pushes without the brake) or Ready (one push with the brake)....it won't work in just ACC (one push with no foot on brake)

Patrick: My blessed mentor. I think I tried that, but I must have messed up somehow. I've been running back and forth between here and the computer for the past 20 minutes.....

I'll try to follow your directions exactly, but for those who remember me changing out the cabin filter....this may take awhile.

Well, I had looked at several web sites, as well as the manual....and I don't know what it is, but Patrick, you have a career in "Prius Fixin'" awaiting you if you ever decide to do something different.

Your advice worked perfectly.....HUGS AND KISSES!!!!

Kristi

Hi Kristi,

That's great. Did you change the engine oil/oil filter yourself; or did someone else perform that work?

Why is it that I can't understand MOST of the instructions in the manual.

I read the "oil reset" section several times and the instructions nowhere approach what was posted here.

Yes, I changed my oil around June 15, which was the "first six months" ownership mark.

Since I drive so little, I had to use the "time guideline" rather than miles.

No problem. Went much better than the first time when I changed it at 1000 miles. Then I had trouble figuring out just how much 3.9 quarts was, had trouble pouring into the "pouring hole," etal.

This time, I stopped at NAPA in Eugene, Oregon, bought a NAPA silver filter, four quarts of NAPA 5W-30 and for about $11 and some pennies managed to get the job done...receipts saved and filed.

This time, I removed the air filter cover as recommended by HOBBIT and gave up calculating 3.9 qts and just put in 3.5 qts.

I also installed a FUMOTO oil drain valve, which should make things easier next time.

Off on vacation tommorrow. San Juan Islands, off the Washington Coast. Kayaking with the killer whales for a week.....
