I got the extended warranty from priuschat when I received my new prius. I figured I had better get it now, than wait until just before the 3yr/36000 mile warranty expired, because the $990 price may increase before then.

I did not buy the extended warranty and will not purchase one. I do not purchase extended warranties for any product I buy. Extended warranties are profit centers for companies. The company issuing the warranty knows that statistically they will charge more for the warranty than they will pay out. They are not really selling a service, they are instead selling peace of mind.

Yes, some of you will through out antidotal evidence of a time that you or someone you know saved lots of money because you had an extended warranty. While true they are the minority of cases.

I personally believe that people buy warranties because they cannot pay for expensive repairs in the rare case that they occur. Rather than saving a small amount per month into a emergency fund that could be used for any emergency or repair they instead buy a warranty that is product specific. In the case of a car warranty that extra cost for the warranty is usually rolled into the the purchase price and one pays finance charges on the warranty as well. This is a very expensive way to buy piece of mind.

we bought an extended warranty through PC before we hit 36k miles. at 3 years and a few months, we're already at 53k miles. still under powertrain warranty for another 7k miles, but because of the sheer parts expense for the car we decided to get the EW.

had it been a non-hybrid, no way in hell would we have bought one.

Bought mine from dealer, due to living in a very hostile- high temperature part of the country, here in the Desert. Heat is the enemy..for most any electrical component(s) here. Time will tell if it was worth it. Same for me..if it was a non -hybrid, no way I'd buy(or ever have) a extended Warranty.

Planned on keeping this thing a long time..no matter what the gas price. In this heat, just a failure of the main Battery, after the standard Hybrid warranty expires, will make me a genius in my decision to buy this warranty. And, I've always wanted to be one of those.

Besides, with my luck, I'll need it. I'm the guy that buys a suit with two pair of pants, and burns a hole in the coat !

The traction battery is covered under the hybrid system warranty which is at least 8 years/100K miles. Therefore the extended warranty will not cover that particular item. However the extended warranty will cover other electrical and mechanical components, and you may well be able to take advantage of its coverage.

None of the above.

Bought a 7/75,000 warranty from Troy, here on Priuschat. Would do it again.

Another 'non of the above' person here. Just prior to 36K we got ours from a different provider. But on our Lexus hybrid we DID give troy the business. The lexus warranty goes to 48K but we bought appx 12K early, just because they impressed us. Great peeps.

I think that's close enough to put you in the choice #3 group, notwithstanding the wrong verb tense.

Yes, Patrick, I did state that wrong, However.....

thought the Standard Toyota Warranty was 3 yr/36000, Hybrid items -5yr/50000, including the battery ? And no Hybrid Battery warranty after 5/50 ? Guess I'd better read that Factory one again.
Yes, the extended 'Platinum' 8 year does cover many of those other but expensive items too, like motors for windows, mirrors, relays, etc. Those add up, but to $1000, we'll see I guess. Again in this heat.......I went for it.
Last time I had to replace 1 power window motor in a Honda here, it was $340 installed. The car was 6 years old, out of warranty. This Hybrid stuff( loaded with relays, electrical cables), is too uncertain for me. And, I do plan on keeping this a long time, no matter what the gas price.

We have a taxi company here in Scottsdale, with a fleet of these...in a God Awful looking electric Green paint job.

Also...the Prius Plug in test car and now the solar paneled Prius is seen around here often. Wish I had my camera at the time. I carry it now.

I waited until my 2006 had 34k miles on it.

At that point, it seemed obvious that the 2009 was not going to be significantly different from my current car, so I bought a shorter warranty from Troy, just to tide me over until the 2010 (or whatever year) comes out with the new features.

I believe I got the 4 year/65k mile choice, as I put a lot of miles on my car (or at least > 12k a year). I figure I'll have close to 65k by the time the 2010's hit the showroom and I can get my grimy little hands on one!

As an aside... for MOST Toyota cars (and Hondas, too), I would not buy an extended warranty, because I have a great deal of faith in the quality of their products. It was only because of the advanced, unique technologies in the Prius that I opted to buy it, figuring that one little feature broken could be big $$$$ to fix.
