Coming up on week 2 of the new ride and all is well. Today I spoke with the finance folks at the dealer to see what kind of price they could give me on the warranty. The can't touch the price being quoted from Warranty Shack but were concerned that "other" offers may not be honored by Toyota in the future. I haven't gotten that feeling from what I read here but it makes me think......hum what to do?

Hey Troy - We don't know each other yet but when I get around to buying my extended warranty from you... don't forget this useful poll I started. I think it is probably most interesting to you although it wasn't intended to be so. Maybe you could give me a break on the 6/100k already low price - LOL.

Sounds like dealer BS.

It's a Toyota warranty. Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA is authorized to sell it. Your Toyota dealer is required to honor it.

We got ours from our dealer when we picked up the car. I was just chatting with the finance guy and in the conversation priuschat.com came up. We just talked briefly about the plethora of information here, not the warrantyshack.com offer, and I think he could tell we had done our homework. He offered the platinum package for $1100 and they did not charge for the carpeted floor mats, so we took it.

Thanks Boo, my plan is to use Warranty Shack as none of the dealers in the area are willing or able to come even close to what I was quoted by the Shack. I tried to give the local guys a chance to give a better price but what was I thinking!? If they mark up the cars by $5000, why would they deal on the other things.

I was just curious if anyone had ever actually used the extended warranty purchased through Warranty Shack. I am nervous about purchasing the plan from out-of-state. It sounds like a great deal though!

How about a choice that says, "I've never owned an extended warranty on anything and by not buying them I have saved enough to fix anything that breaks."

Unless you made a bad choice and bought a vehicle that is prone to expensive failures (the Prius is not one of these), don't plan on doing the scheduled maintenance (in which case the warranty might not be any good anyway), or are very hard on cars (you may need a driving lesson) there is no good reason I can think of to buy an extended warranty.

We have two Prii, one new one with the extended warranty, and one with 83,000 miles on it without.

We shall see if it was worth it - both scenarios.

I'm buying the 100k warranty as I've only had my car since Feb 28, 2008 and already have over 15,000 miles on it.

I inquired via the Warranty Shack link about the "extended warranty" (actually Platinum Extra Care agreement), and Troy Dietrich got back to me with some quotes as soon as he got back from his vacation.

After giving it some thought (and being quite near the 3yr / 36k cutoff), I opted for the $0 deductible, 7yr / 100k plan, and sent in the required paperwork (photocopy of auto registration, a signed letter noting my current mileage, and a check for $990).

Lori Leroux responded promptly with a kind letter of thanks explaining that I'm now entered into the system and the Platinum Extra Care contract would arrive shortly from Toyota. Lo and behold, the contract arrived sooner than I expected.

I don't have any reason to think that I'll need the coverage anytime soon, but I'm glad to have it "just in case".

Thanks, Lori and Troy!
