That's from Tom Stangl's VFAQ.com site. I think he used to have images of the installed tach on the site and other instructions, but I can't find them. He installed his in the glove box, I think.

Should be very easy to do.

I dont see much use. WIth the CVT function, the ICE speed will vary not only with speed, but with load. And of course it will shut off when EV running can be executed. My question is this: other than curiosity and accident-causing distraction, what actions will you take that are different depending on what the tach tells you? I just don't see the point. It's about as useful as a reading of ignition advance while driving.

Curiosity and understanding are the only things. I think it's one more tool that someone could use to better understand what the system is doing.

With that information you could, in theory, probably learn how to better, more efficiently, drive the Prius.

But yea, in day to day use there isn't much point.

Evan I use it almost all the time to hold my rpm when accelerating to road speed. I try and hold it to a steady 3000 rpm by backing off on the throttle as the car accelerates. The other info that I use is charging/discharging amps and temp info from battery cell temp to MG temps also the O2 sensor voltage and how and when it relates to S4. I don't have my head buried in the display but glance when time and safty considerations are met. MG temps while hill climbing as I have learned that there isn't a lot of amp draw if the rpm's are at 3000-3500 and the car is not gaining speed(MG1 output goes directly to MG2). That is on a really steep hill on the way home from work. 10% grade and about 45-50 miles an hour.

Well, knowing these things might explain why after I filled up on Wed night, I got fantastic mileage yesterday: 63 MPG total for 60 miles travelled, yet today it is still in the 60's but not as high, though traffic was much better today.

How do I get a circuit description (schematic, programming, etc) in English? Not so sure I like the idea of having to tap into all the sensor inputs/outputs.

So, the TACHO signal is pin5 of D connector same as Japanese models.

Yes, it is.

The other signals we got are...

Pin3 of A connecter: INJ
Pin 19 of A connecter: THW(coolant temp)
Pin 20 of A connecter: THA(intake-air temp)
Pin 9 of D connecter: +12V
Pin 7 of A connecter: GND

Sorry, there is no such circuit description.
The schematics is all written in English.
It uses Atmel AT90S4433 microprocessor and the programming HEX files are at my site.
Please find your friend who has the programming tools for Atmel processors.
