Today's (25-JUL-05) WSJ has a section on the future of the automotive industry. A couple of interesting items - May sales for the Prius were 9,461 outselling the Chrysler Pacfica and Pontiac G6. If all of the drivers in the sedan/SUV segments that have hybrids available were driving hybrids, the US would consume 20% less oil, or about twice what we import from the Persian Gulf. While one of the articles that covers the primary alternatives to standard gasoline cars - diesel, hybrid, and hydrogen makes clear that the economic benefits of a hybrid are upside down for many consumers, it does highlight earlier in the article that clean air is a motivator for many hybrid owners.
