I too am trying to locate better seats. If I am able to find them they would have to be totaly compatable with the current air bag sensing system. If they are not and I have a accident and the air bags do not deploy as orginally designed I am at risk of serious injury not to mention the accident invesgation team will soon figure out I modified the system and report it to my insurance company. They will attempt to not pay for my medical bills etc. It is much to high a risk for me to take. I am hoping the 2009 or later models will have them as an option and they can be retro-fitted for my 2008.

Why so much airbag paranoia? You wont find ANY seats that are compatable.

Someone educate me. What's the difference between not having side air bags, and having them but removing them, or modifying your car in a way that disables them (accidentally or purposely)? How do you rationalize covering me if I get injured in a car that has no air bags, but not covering me if I get injured in a car with air bags but they don't go off due to some modification I made? Aren't those sort of the same? Does it make a difference if what you disable is optional versus standard equipment?

With so many crazy drivers out there running stop lights etc if my wife or I are hit by one of those bozo's I want all the air bags working properly. Reducing the amount of injury in any kind of accident is more important than having upgraded after market seats that are not compatable with the current air bag system.

It's an intentional act to purposely disable a safety device. The car's safety ratings and equipment may influence what an insurance company charges it's customers to insure a specific car. In the Prius, I believe the side bags are standard. Therefore, if they're taken out or disabled and you sustain an injury that may have been prevented by their proper use, an insurance company may be able to make a case for non-coverage due to your intentional act.

also, theoretically, the rate you pay is marginally lower if you have the side air-bags versus if you do not.

Buy a bigger car if your worried about dying. The prius is NOT safe if you get hit by a big car or truck. Also the airbags WONT go off if the bumpers don't hit each other. You think a 2500 4x4 diesel with a 6" lift will match up with your bumper? If a big truck hits you your dead!

My buddy works for CHP and sees small cars and their dead drivers all the time. If you really are that concerned about your wife the extra fuel would not be an issue.

Side airbags will only go off on a side impact so no bumpers need to be bumped on.
A bigger car will likely kill you easier. Most SUV and 4x4 are known to just fall of their wheels to the side or the roof when you try to avoid collision.

I am more concerned about people running red lights and getting t-boned. I see those idiots every day...there was one at the intersection where I work. Some one on a cell phone was not paying attention ran the light and hit another car. Even with cameras at the intersection they still do it. It seems to be getting worse every day. People in a hurry and don't want to wait or using their cell phone and not focused on driving.
