How are you going to remove it when you park though? Sitting on the dash like that will overheat the device in some areas of the country. Or are you going to just cover it? |

Well, I guess it's OK if you plan on keeping your car forever, and not ever want to upgrade to a newer or different model. Personally, I wouldn't cut open my dash, knowing that I'd probably try to sell the car in 5-10 years to buy a PHEV Prius. From the potential buyer pool, I would be eliminating those who have no use for or don't want that extra device in the car. Also, most similarly-sized electronic devices these days don't last more than a few years. A lot of people will want to upgrade, or simply replace a broken device. And I'll bet that in 4-5 years the next ScanGauge will have a different size and shape, requiring a different shape cutout. |

If I could get a bezel for it I might be able to make it tilt which would take care of the small glare from the windshield. Didn't think of an overheating problem. I don't park it without my trusty retractable sunshade front and back so hopefully it'll be ok. What a crappy lesson this could turn out to be. I wanted to put it in the center console in the flip down tray cover, mounted on the lid so it flips down out of the way when the compartment's open and recessed so it's flush when closed. After looking around I realized every other car I've driven has you look through the steering wheel to read your gauges. I stuck it on to see how it looks and it felt natural. I don't have to take my eyes off the road much or look around the cabin to find it. A little cumbersome to program in that position but once it's all set up, shouldn't be hard to manipulate. It's only pushed in snug so if I want to take it out I can without taking the dash apart. Before I started I called the dealer to see what the damage whould be for this, $190.95+tax. That made me think about it a little more. That's pretty much all I thought about the whole time, $200, $200, did I cut that too much, $200.

Its out of the way, its in line of sight, and you can easily get to it to change the screen when needed. I'm tempted to do the same installation but I don't know if I want a permanently mounted SG at the moment. I might stick with some Velcro to mount it at that location for now. Again nice work jammin012! |
