Hi Pb,
Yes, you are correct. I am running the BMS16C with a February system. With these older systems the BMS16C does not shut off the converter. However my converter does shut itself down with a red light at a total pack voltage of 45.2v

The BMS16C does much better than the DB8s at balancing. I still see a high group of cells and a low group of cells. After balancing over night there is only about 12mv/cell difference between the high group of cells and the low group of cells.

I still run the CellLogs with loud alarms. the CellLog alarms and the converter red light happen at about the same time.

Hope this is the information that you are looking for.

Thanks,
Dan

Ok, this is fine. I don't need the new BMS to shut down the converter. If my cells are balanced the converter will do that safely on its own. I will really want the plug in and walk away to happen though - that's what really matters to me.

Thankx Dan - it's a good idea to have the CellLog+Siren as a safety net. I have been running w/o any balancing and the deltaV over night is as low as 6mv in the morning. But underload, the deltaV between buddy pairs are much greater. Let's see if the BMS16C would improve the delta underload.

I would worry about discharge a cell too low without the BMS shutdown, or at least some sort of alarm/siren warning of a low cell. It is true that if the cells are balanced, then the converter will shutdown properly. But imagine the pack being at 46v, but a cell being at 1.5v. That single cell is getting killed.

There are two pins, next to the RJ45 plug on the BMS16C, I wander if these are in fact the alarm trigger. If they are, it should be pretty straight forward to rig up a relay to "switch" off since the user switch is just shorting to chassis ground.

For those with the 5000 converter, are these two pins connected to the converter ?

Thx, Pb

The BMS16C has a 2 wire connection and CAT5 type connection from the converter.

If the BMS is doing it's job, the cells will be balanced so I won't need to worry about that.
