Hello!

I bought my 2006 Prius last year in Rhode Island and I live in Connecticut. I payed no sales tax in Rhode Island. I am currently filing my Conn. taxes and I am not sure if I have to pay the sales tax on my Prius from my RI purchase? On the state tax form from COnn. it asks about purchases over $500. out of state.

Please help! Chrissy

Hello. Welcome to the site. I am absolutely amazed that you would even have this question. To register a car in NJ the buyer must prove that sales tax was paid to the seller. If not, the tax is collected at the MVC. IMO you are legally obligated to pay the Conn. sales tax. I am presuming since the car is a titled good there is some mechanism in place at the sate to verify sales tax compliance. I suspect if you don't pay it now sooner or later they will come after you for it.

Jim,
Thank you for responding. I guess my main question is that I bought my 2006 Prius in Rhode Island and there was no sales tax on hybrid cars in Rhode Island . I then registered my car in Connecticut as I live here. And now in doing my state taxes for CT, it asks about purchases made in another state over x amount of money. I was assuming that maybe I did not need to pay a sales tax to Connecticut (as for #1 I did not purchase it in CT and as #2 CT does not have sales taxes on hybrids). I may be incorrect. I am not sure.
What do you think?

Thank you-
Chrissy

I live here in CT. You should be aware that Hybrid vehicles are EXEMPT from Ct state sales tax. No matter where you bought it. As to how you fill out the form, I don't know. I'd go to DRS@Ct.gov and see if they have an FAQ.

Good news.

I am assuming that for 2008 we will still need to file:
f1040
f6251
f8910 (not available from irs)

I started the taxact.com process to familiarize myself with it, will I still need to file the 6251 and 8910 forms separately or will that program complete all of it for me?

I'm not very familiar with the tax process and purchased my prius on 04/29/07.

The program completes, prints & files all the forms and schedules needed for the return.
