First you make sure you are on the phone screen. Second you press the voice button on the steering wheel.
wait for the beep then say either "dial by name" or "dial by number"
It will tell you when to talk again. wait for the beep then say the name (which you recorded earlier) It will tell you what it thought you said if it is correct press the voice button again and say "dial". If it is not correct you can repeat the name you previously said (after pushing the talk button) or you can say "next candidate". If you say dial by number then after the first beep say each one of the area code digits and pause. It will verify what you have said and tell you to push the talk button to continue adding numbers or to dial. Push the talk button again, wait for the beep, then say the remaining seven numbers. It will repeat the numbers back to you then you push the off hook button or say "dial." It may take a couple of tries but it really works well for me and should for you too.

With the 2006 Prius there is a shortcut for 'dial by number.

1) Press the off-hook phone button on the steering wheel (Speed dial screen will appear).

2) Press the 'back arrow' button on the screen.

3) Press the voice command button on the steering wheel. It will now just ask you for the phone number to dial.

If you speak clearly, distinctly, and without any pauses all 10 digits (area code and number) can be spoken at one time. It can help to speak to the rearview mirror since the microphone is just above that in the ceiling.

I found the Nav lady voice annoying after the first phone call with her lengthy instructions over and over again each phone call. So, this combination of buttons and voice is both faster and less annoying. I wish they would allow us to press the off-hook button on the steering wheel to initiate the call immediately after we say the phone number instead of having to wait until she finishes telling us that we can press the off hook button. As if we do not know that! If you interrupt her while she is speaking this by pressing the off hook button - then the call is lost!

Separately, on the 2006 model I have used the voice command 'dial by name' and 'dial by number' voice commands successfully without being on the telephone screen.

Best regards,

Eric

Cool shortcut, thanks Eric! I can't seem to get the ten numbers out fast enough for the first push, but then I do speak slowly.

I found this extremely confusing when I first started using it. I finally realized that I had to wait until she was done talking. I was hoping there was some way of disabling the lengthy prompts, but I guess not.

I tried this several times yesterday but it didn't work. Every time I said "Dial by name" it switched on the a/c. Maybe I've got the wrong accent.

"(which you recorded earlier)"

What does this mean? Is there some way of recording by sound the names in the address book?

They're talking about a new voice-dialling facility in the 2006 Prius. We don't have it.

On my 2006 I can Dial by Name, but there is no Dial by Number. Was it left out on European Prii?
