check your oil level, make sure the oil's not overfilled. check your throttle body for a pool of oil if the oil's overfilled.

there's an engine ecu update, if you haven't gotten it and your error codes match the tsb, toyota will pay for it.

2003 Prius with P3191...If you had an earlier year I would quickly suspect that you need a new ECM (computer). This is not supposed to be the case for the 03's but it may be more likely than anything that follows here. Certainly you can ask a Toyota tech to do the diagnostic procedure for TSB EG 011-03.

I had not heard that a small amount of oil in the intake manifold will cause a misfire, in fact it's beginning to seem difficult to keep that area free of engine oil. However it is certainly so that a heavy load of soot on the throttle butterfly can cause misfire, so cleaning that would be a priority.

There is a different proplem related to the exhaust system that was supposed to also be cured after 2001 but... Ask the tech to confirm the function of the HCAC valve. This should not cause a 3191 though...

The intake air flow sensor could be sooted-up, but here there is a difference of opinion: some DIY owners will try to clean em but Toyota will certainly prefer to install a new one. Then follow the usual steps for misfires; clean or replace injectors and plugs. Standard verbiage for non-hybrid vehicles as well.

Please do provide a later update because again the misfire/ECM scenario (first above) is not supposed to be happening in a 2003.

I took my '03 Prius to the dealer with the same problem message. They ended up replacing the computer (ECM) and fuel pump for a not so grand total of $2100 out of my pocket. The ECM warranty was to 80,000 miles and this happened at 80,386 miles. Good luck to you and I hope your car is still under warranty.

I have recently encountered the same problem. I have owned my Prius for exactly 5 weeks. Last Sunday I tried to back it out of my driveway and it would not move...instead the steering wheel began shaking and made a wickedly loud sound. The ! light was on, as well the the PS light. Ultimately, I called the dealer. The car actually ran well enough for me to drive it to Toyota the next day (the shaking had stopped), but all power steering was gone.

The Toyota folks said they were shocked that this happened to a car so new (I was just about to call for my standard 1000 mile check-up). I have now learned that the entire computer system has died, and needs to be completely replaced.

After five weeks!!!! And I bought a Toyota because my friends, family, and everyone else in the world claimed they were the most reliable of all car brands. Needless to say, I feel ripped off, though Toyota is replacing the problem at no cost to me. But the car is brand new...what can I expect to happen in the future, the car to leave me stranded along the freeway???

Has anyone else had this experience with a new Prius? Does anyone else know what the chances are of this car working properly for the long term, without other frequent, unexpected glitches?

Thanks!
