hi all

I was foolish enough to not drive in my prius to the dealer to get oil changed at 5000 miles. I took at in @ 7600 miles ( i drive a lot due to my job)

does that automatically void my car's warranty?

thanks

Yep you're done. Nothing left to do now but to sell it.

Seriously though....no it doesn't void the warranty unless Toyota can prove you have oil related engine damage due to the additional 1500 miles. I guarantee your oil can go more miles than that and not hurt the engine. And even further still if you use synthetic oil. You don't even have to get the oil changed by a Toyota dealership or any dealership.....you can do it yourself and keep your warranty good.

And of course, even if it had done damage (and it probably couldn't if only done one time, even with dino oil), only the engine would be out of warrantee, nothing else.

One thing I should point out is that an engine is pretty tough and even if you went 10,000 miles on dino oil it wouldn't hurt it. Sure the oil would be dirty but it still wouldn't hurt the engine doing this once.

Hi Ryan, as your engine oil has now been changed, I would recommend that you take a sample of the current batch when it is due to be changed and have that analyzed. The procedure is relatively simple and will cost you an additional $20.

In all likelihood the results of that analysis will show that your Prius engine is in fine shape. Then you can go back to enjoying it and put this minor incident out of your mind.

Going 1600 miles over the recommended change time will NOT result in engine damage nor does it need an oil analysis.

Relex, Ryan.
Just follow the schedule from now on.
We are not talking about 20K miles w/o oil change here.

With my '98 BMW, if I had strictly followed the computer, the first scheduled oil change was due at 14K miles.
No kidding. Not synthetic either. Of course, I love my BMW more than THAT. <_<

Sell it? After running the oil that long? Good luck with that!

Out of the generocity of my heart, I'll haul it away for free. It won't cost you a dime to get that oil-burning, out-of-warranty Prius off your hands.

What do you say?

ryan,

Tony is giving you a GREAT deal there, and I suggest you take him up on it right away. He might change his mind and not want to do you the favor if you don't hurry.

(Tony, when he gives you the car and you sell it, I want a cut).
