News item this morning on the radio. Exon/Mobil has announced discontinuation of funding for organizations that provided dis-information on Hybrids. So, in a backward way, they have admitted funding the dis-information campaign, such as promulgated by CNW. I believe they were caught admitting the funding in the past as well.

Big Oil. "You can trust us, really."

I'm starting to think that MichGal has a good point. There have been many times I've been talking with coworkers and the general public where I have shown them news articles on fuel efficiency only to hve them say, "oh yeah, well I heard that you have to replace the battery in five years." So I produce evidence that the batteries are good for many hundreds of thousands of miles only to have them reply, "oh yeah, well I heard that you never earn your money back." To which I present charts and spreadsheets." They reply, "oh yeah, well I heard that a hummer is more environmentally friendly."

You get the point.
They throw <strike>up</strike> out some stupid "facts" that I quickly rebuff only to have them regurgitate another one. It's completely puts all the pressure on me to overturn their already skewed perception. Eventually, if they try hard enough, they'll find something that I can't defend adequately and declare victory.

Let's face it, the people who really should be reading the reports and learning the truth are not the ones reading and learning.

Very True, I remember how when I hit my first 600 mile tank and I told someone about it and his actual words were that really isn't all that good, I can go 700 miles easily on a tank in my Silverado. So I go yeah but I'm talking off of $25 worth of gas. And again to my surprise his comeback was yeah well you can't haul anything can you.

As if they are hauling things every day of their life.... But I get the point - they are living in the State of Denial....

Ask him what does he haul? More than 90% of SUV/Pickup drivers never haul anything other than a bike rack.

That's a good point. You can only discontinue what you were doing in the first place.

As far as the original question in this topic, we don't know how long the average Prius will last. They haven't started dieing off in large numbers yet. Other than from accidents, I haven't heard of anyone sending one to the recyclers.

Check back in, oh, say ten years. They have so far earned one of the best ratings, even in Toyotaland.

I think your best bet is to ignore it and wait it out as well.

I got some ribbing when I first got my Prius. My brother called it "the golf cart" and my Dad reminds me not to drive in the rain in case I get electrocuted.

As time passes and the price of gas goes up, they're pretty quiet. My Mom likes to ride in it. My Dad finally rode in it and complimented it on it's power and quiet.

As time passes he'll evenutally shut up. He might even start to ask you questions about it. Who knows. Someday he might even trade that Hummer in for some kind of hybrid. Just try not to rub it in when he's replacing his timing belt or something. [/b]

As I sit in my nice, quiet, soon-to-be tidy house, I can't help but think about just how flabberghasted my 19-year-old son is that I am utterly downcast as I am forced to be driving around in my husband's 2002 BMW 5-Series 5-speed, since they are en route to Montreal, to deliver above-mentioned son to school, approximately 3,000 miles--since above-mentioned beemer couldn't hold the necessary load, nor could we justify the extra expense (in dollars OR resources) of using it for the trip. He just CANNOT understand how ANYONE could POSSIBLY prefer driving a Prius to ANY beemer under the sun. (Both son and husband refuse to acknowledge that the expense of replacement parts, or rather, more to the point, the NEED TO REPLACE PARTS, is also a factor...)

I mean, you gotta use a freakin' KEY--who wants to be bothered with such OLD technology?!?!

Oh last time I looked in the bed of his truck there were about 10 smashed up soda cans, a fishing rod, and a lawn chair. It's a good thing he hauls alot. Of course this is the same guy that tells me it is worth paying a premium for 4 wheel drive even though he admits that he will never use it.

I like the concept of a wager. But I would put more money on the table. Any modifications you want to add to your car (things like suspension upgrade, lightweight wheels, or...)? The wager is the surest way to get somebody else to fund your mod budget.

Sorry, I'm not really into the "pimp my Prius" gig. I push the big black button, and it goes.

Hi bgoodr, I think you've got good responses. I'm inclined to recommending ignoring outlaws unless pressed. It puts your fine wife in the middle...

I also want to call your attention to the local HSD/Prius club, link in my signature. Come join us some third Saturday.
[/b]
Good point, except what you don't know is my wife called my attention to it, so she was already the monkey in the middle.

Thanks for the invite to the club!

Ok, are you folks ready for the answer to the question of where the father outlaw's source for his comment? You better swallow that last cup-a-joe/liquid, and sit down for this one, because he heard it on ...

Rush Limbaugh!!

Oh my gawd I am so ashamed I wasted everyones time on the board for this brain-damage! Of course! I shoulda known already! The wife was the one who asked him about his sources, and apparently he didn't want to tell her (ashamed no doubt). <snicker>

Oh well.
