Yes, I remember them. We used them to keep radios warm. I still have my Picket Power Trig slide rule and leather case. I never use it, but I can't stand to toss it either.

Speaking of tubes, remember the tube testers at drug stores and places like that. You would bring in a suspect tube from your TV, plug it into the tester, and get back the "bad" reading. They always tested bad. The base of the tester contained replacement tubes. Long live the 12AU7!

Starting at the age of around 10 my dad always had ME take the tubes to the drug store in a paper bag and test them (and usually grab a can of Sir Walter Raleigh tobacco for him). Would happen at least a couple times a year. Some new devices still use vacuum tubes (ham radio amps, high-end stereo amps), I think most tubes are now made in Russia. We digress.... again!

Wow, I thought I was the only old f**t who visited this site. How about the 6AL5? I never trusted the testers at drug stores. I used to take a trip to "the big city" (Newark, NJ) to Lafayette Radio when I needed to test a tube. Their prices also beat drug store prices. Radio Shack eventually drove them out of business.
Like you, I just can't bear to part with my old slide rule -- a Keuffel & Esser (K&E) "Log Log Duplex Decitrig" dating back to 1951.

Another Tom, by the way.

Cool

UPDATE!!!

So they fixed the Prius. They flew the computer all the way over from sunny LA. Then as the maintenance man was driving the PRius to where I was standing , the check engine light cam on AGAIN!

But all is well in the world! They are going to get me a different Prius. Hopefully the dealership will obtain one tomorrow. In the mean time they gassed up my loner Camery and patiently I await!

A different Prius is what I wanted, so I am happy now! The uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach is gone!

That's great to hear, a dealer who does things right.

That's great because they just are replacing parts without thinking. Computers are high quality and reliable in cars. I had older Camry, same thing, replaced computer for no improvement, was something minor. It is just an easy button to blame "computer."

That sucks!!

Hopefully, it is a single defective part and replacing it will solve your problem permanently, and this will be the only problem you encounter.

I agree with previous posts about "that's what a warranty is for". On the other hand, if you DO continue to experience problems, make sure you document them well. The Lemon Laws will protect you.

I speak from experience having had Mercedes-Benz buy back a 2005 E500 from me after constantly experiencing problems with it starting at about 3k miles.

Sure, every time ther ewas a problem, they fixed it as a warranty repair. But what that fails to address is the fact that I paid $60k+ for the E500, and I was in a position of having to take it to the shop a minimum of once per month for the 18 months or so that I owned it. Warranty or not, the bottom line is I paid to drive an E500, and 25% of the time, I was driving around some C-Class loaner car from the dealership and having todeal with the headache of scheduling repairs, dropping off, picking up, etc.

When the car was re-purchased by MBUSA, they used some formula to determine te vaule, and the fact that my problems started at 300 miles means that I received nearly the entire value of the car back. Since your problem started the day after you bought the car, you would probably get back the entire value of the car.

But, again, I suspect the simple part replacement is going to solve your issue permanently. My new 2007 Prius has had no problems or issues, and I have heard of very few in other people's Prius vehicles. So you don't have to worry that you have some sort of problem-plagued type of car. Probably just an isolated occurence of a defective part.

Good luck.

UPDATE: Should have read more carefully. That is great that they are giving you a replacement unit!! I'll still leave my post up since it might provide helpful info to someone else in your situation. Enjoy the "new" new Prius

I loved Lafayette Radio. I miss those places. Allied was another good one, although they didn't have as many stores. Allied is still around, but only the commercial part of the business.

Oh the memories. Lafayette was great - I was a regular for electronics parts in high school. Allied was OK for those odd-ball things Lafayette didn't have. Radio Shack was for kids. We used to do our tube testing at the local Circle-K.
