i started my prius other day to find out it barely had power to startup, i then turned on the screen to the check voltage on the acc mode teh battery had 11.9 but when the vehicle was turned on ( not ready mode ) battery went down to 9.9

i was about to buy a 12 volt battery.

so i decided to take apart the ground cable from the body and the positive lead, i discovered the ground wire, the portion that bolts on the body was corodded, this resulted in lower voltages, as soon as i wirebrushed and hooked it back up everything was back to normal.

just a word of advice if any of you have 12v battery problems on older nhw20 prius check the ground cables

Salt air perhaps. Consider greasing the cable ends to keep the salt air away. (I see you are in Cape Corral Fla.

Every fall I back off and tighten again the bolt that holds the battery ground wire to the unitbody. If you drive in an area with road salt, or live near salt water, don't be surprised if ground points start to corrode on their own

Even if the battery posts look clean, the body ground bolts may have heavy corrosion. It helps if you can reach behind that area and spray an anticorrosion product like LPS 3 or Fluid Film. Sometimes the only way to get the waxy fluid is to remove the bolt, liberally spray the product into the hole, and then put the bolt back on.

Around 10 years ago, the '84 Ford F-150 at my hobby farm I use as a plow and work truck, started to cranky VERY slowly. Tried a new battery, nadda. New starter and starter cable, nada. New starter solenoid, zip. I then decided to replace the battery cables

The negative cable on the 302 is attached to the engine block. When I tried to remove the bolt, it snapped right off, it was corroded almost all the way through. Had to drill out and tap for a new bolt. No more sluggish cranking

the corrosion was on the part where the ground wire bolts on the body

this was salvaged, so i just had the wires disconnected completely, so i guess it would rust? the rust isnt really bad, its just like a light coat on top of the connector that the bolts go thruogh

FWIW, when I changed my battery last month that body bolt showed no signs of corrosion at all...it was clean and shiny like new...the entire area was for that matter.

well u know part of the reason i think was the bolt was not tight, so it kinda arced probably corodding it.

it was a salvage car so when i got it i had to pull battery out and trickle charge while i worked on it

Salvaged from a flood, maybe. Good luck with it.

A bit of dielectric silicone compound, on the battery terminals and hardware, is a good thing.
