How is the used Prius market doing late in the year? I haven't been following prices much but am considering parting with my 2004 with 20k miles, option package #9, basically loaded. It is silver and I will include new front mats with the car as I always seem to wear a hole where my heal goes.

Car is in perfect shape. Bad time to sell?

Up here in NE, I've hit up a few dealerships over the week, and I've gotten trade in offers from 14.9-17K.... So far...

don't know if that helps you, but it is a data point...

i know down here in southern california you cant find a used prius. they are flying off the dealer lots at crazy prices. I called on an 05 with 15K and they wanted 28K for it. It had nav and leather but still, that is damn near the price of a new one.

It might be good to wait for gas prices to rise, but I wonder if the tax credit's going to be well advertised next year. It seems that dealers probably don't want people to know about it this year, but will want people to know about it next year. Seems like that could be bad for the used car market.

Couldn't hurt to throw it on craigslist.

Very slow going -- I've had my 02 up for a month... some nibbles but no real bites.
I think it may be the time of year.
Cheers!

Right. I don't think many people go out looking between Thanksgiving anf New Years. Those who previously ordered a car (and it comes in) and those who forwhatever reason need one in a hurry are probably the bulk of the buyers. A lot of people remember that these "spring sales events", with ultra-low interest rates, are coming up, too, having become pretty much a staple.

I think that applies to the used car market, too, but not quite as much.

We looked at a used 2005 Prius at a delaership in Missouri last week, 12,000 miles, for 22,990. The new price for the model we saw was 23,900 (or thereabouts) and in reply to the question 'why would we not pay an extra grand for brand new' was only 'you don't have to wait.' They had just gotten the car the day before and had little interest in offers; the car was in great shape, though there was a minor scratch near the back and a very small dimple in the hood.
