I'm selling my 2005 Prius in the Washington DC area. It's a Tideland Pearl (dark gray) model with the BC (#6) package - this includes the voice activated DVD navigation and wireless Bluetooth phone option. I've had it for just under 9 months.

It has 10,600 miles on it. I'm asking $23,900 (about $300 under Kelly Blue Book).

I have also have this posted on cars.com

Thanks... I'm trying to price it to sell. I have a Mini Cooper coming in about a week and would like to sell the Prius by then.

The main reason is that I previously drove a stick-shift for 12 years, and I wound up really missing it. I know that it probably sounds silly to most people, but that is what is basically boils down to.

I think that the Prius is a great car for the money, and I don't have any complaints with the way it handles or drives. The gas mileage has been fantastic for me... always right around 45 mpg while commuting to and from work (the MFD incorrectly reports about 2 mpg better than actual).

If there is anything about the car that I could complain about, it's the MFD. It lacks tactile feedback, there are too many button presses to get simple things done, and the locking-out of functions while the car is in motion is annoying (did Toyota ever consider that my passenger could safely input a map destination or phone number?).

I have the feeling that in another 10 or 15 years, when I do get tired of driving a manual, I will probably be looking at the Prius (or it's equivalent) again.

As far as getting the Cooper, I was really blown away by the way it handles (no body lean while cornering or hard braking). I do wish that it had better mileage (especially for being such a small/light car). Also, I enjoy working on my cars and things like 4 wheel disc brakes make life easier (anyone who has had to wrangle with a drum's shoe-lever mechanism would agree).

I would not call it cheap, at about a 10% drop from new, for a prior model car. Reasonable, yes; particularly if the trim is hard to come by without a wait.

Arild, I hope you post how much end up selling the car for.

Sure it's a 10% drop from a new base model.

But then again it's a >15% drop from an *equivalent* 2006 model (I believe you now need to get option package #7 to come by DVD Nav).

I'll post if I line up a buyer this week. Otherwise it's the $23,000 offer that CarMax gave me in writing. In my area the dealers are asking $25,000 for this model (CarMax included).

Arild,

I started from $30K for the loaded trim (which I think you have ?), then arrived at $27K after taking the tax credit into account.

24/27 ~ 90%

Tax considerations may play a part here, but that is state specific.

Eric,

I'll agree with you that it is not much of a price drop from what we paid for the new car. The CarMax offer blew me away at first (until I saw how much they marked up themselves).

But going by the market prices, Priuses are hot right now. (Perhaps as a result of high demand, low supply?). The Prius is simply unlike any other car in the market right now!

For me the $2k federal tax deduction came off the adjusted gross income (no state deductions). Thus I paid about $600 less in tax (2000 * ~30%). For 2006 the federal deduction has been reduced to $500. I think it's short sighted on the part of the government, but it works in favor for those of us selling a Prius.

The tax deduction you and I gained has been superceded by a $3150 tax CREDIT. This is the reason that your asking price does not look as attractive. Apparently some people do not get it because of AMT, but then those folks would perhaps not be your prospective buyers ?

The carMax offer would look darn good to me if I was in your shoes. How long is it good for ? Like any car, the amount you will get is very locale specific. I'd hazard a guess, though, that unless wait times are on the order of months in your area, your asking price will not be met.

Addendum: A 2006 package #7 Prius is $27.5k + $500 destination charge
