Default Prius Plug-in Hybrid Gets Improved 95 MPGe Rating

This is great news and one I was hoping for. I never thought mileage in HV mode would be worse, even if only by 1 mpg, than the Prius liftback. Also noteworthy, the new MPGe number is only 1 number HIGHER than the Volt's MPGe rating.

Quote:
Toyota is updating its figures for the Prius Plug-in Hybrid model ahead of the car’s launch, with improved numbers for both the MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) rating and the remaining hybrid drive mpg rating. Previously Toyota had claimed the plug-in Prius would achieve 87 mpge using the electric mode and a 49 mpg once the battery pack energy is depleted and the car resumes operation as a conventional Prius.

The new numbers announced by Toyota Division Group VP and GM Bob Carter at a launch program for the Prius c put the plug-in model at an improved 95 mpge, while the regular hybrid drive operation has increased one mpg to 50. That MPGe number is now just one OVER the Chevy Volt.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid will get a 15 mile range on electric energy alone, at speeds of up to 62 mph. In addition, the car will gain a AT-PZEV emission rating meaning it will qualify for access to California’s HOV lanes.

First deliveries of the Prius plug-in hybrid to customers will take place in March.

Great news! 95 MPGe on electricity (perhaps with some gas blended) and then 50 MPG on regular gas!

Actually the Volt MPGe is 95/93, for an average of 94 which is one lower than the newly revised Prius PHV number.. So the Prius will be more efficient in EV mode and much better in CS mode, which is good. (I never understood why they were only at 87mpge for EV).

Even though I drive a volt.. I too must say Way to go toyota!!!

...couple of thoughts
1) Need to get that 95 MPGe figure on the PC home page when we get a chance (says 87)

2) Does the 95 figure include some gaso, and if so does that suggest the 100% EV value for PiP is well >100 MPGe? Believe some here had speculated that PiP 100% EV value might be >110 MPGe before the 87 came out, which was a little bit of a bummer.

Yea, they are saying 15 miles on pure electric. The Japanese Prius PHV need 3kWh from the wall for a full charge so it came out 200 Wh/mi. That translates to 169 MPGe pure electric.

The 95 MPGe seem to be a blend of electric and gas on EPA cycle.

It still says 87 on toyota's page. lol. It likely uses less gasoline than the one they tested at 87 mpge Why don't we wait until Toyota actually releases epa numbers, these should have real us tested kwh and gasoline usage.

“It’s still an estimate, but we are confident it’s going to be 95,” Bob Carter, group vice president of Toyota’s U.S. sales unit, told reporters in La Jolla, California, yesterday. An official rating by the Environmental Protection Agency will come “in a couple weeks,” with deliveries starting in March, he said.
