I bought my Prius about 5 months ago and the temporary tags expired 2 months ago.

I haven't had time to pick up my tags from the dealership (they never called me) so I called them today and they said they did not have the tags and to talk with the manager tomorrow. Note that I have never inquired them about the tags till today.

So what do I do if they do not have the tags and my temp tags are expired? Isn't it their responsibility (especially if I paid the tags processing fee)? What happens now?

    What state are you in?
The dealer will not have your tag, DMV will mail it to your registered address.
Looks like it was lost in the mail, go to the DMV office and ask for a replacement tag.

I'm in MD, isn't it the responsibility of the dealership if you pay the tag processing fee? I thought you picked it up from DMV only if you decide to fill out the tag processing forms yourself?

In Texas you have to get them from the dealer.

Ditto for WA state but in the case of my Nissans, since the dealer was so far away, I asked the dealer to mail plates and tags to me.

(Also, as someone who grew up in California and thus familiar with the DMV) To respond to an earlier comment in the thread, not all states have a body called the "DMV". In WA, it's called the DOL (Department of Licensing).

In WA, some things are even goofier. To get plates and tags for a car coming into the state, one can go to a subagent office instead which is a apparently private business that charges a small fee. The official state office would've had too long a wait and been inconvenient for me to visit (due to time, distance, traffic and parking costs).

You "haven't had time"! Great. No problem. As long as you understand that every time you drive you are risking a violation. I think maybe you better make time. You sound like the kind of person who would be shocked when arrested or summoned for driving an unregistered vehicle. And complain bitterly about the cop not giving you a break.
