    Hi PriusChat,

I have a 2007 Package 6 that I bought used. I wanted to know if there is any maintenance that I should be doing to it other than oil changes every 5,000 miles. I bought the car with 47,000 miles back in January and now have 81,000 now. Before I bought the car the car had oil changed every 5,000 miles which I have continued. That is the extent of the service I have done.

If there is something that I should have done or should do coming up(not going by the Prius MFD, I don't trust it) please tell me as I would like to try to have this Prius get me through the end of my career to my retirement

 110 mile commute will be no more after September 2012

Although I don't believe there is anything additional that the Prius has showed it wanted done I just want to make sure I haven't overlooked any important service.

    Thank you very much

Toyota recommended the engine and cabin air filters be changed at 30,000 and 60,000
Toyota recommended the tires be rotated every 5,000 miles.

Thanks Jimbo. I forgot to mention,

I have been doing the tire rotations each time. I have done both air filters(cabin and engine) twice so far. I appreciate you giving me the actual interval though that will be helpful.

Is there any other things that should have been done and are coming up?

You can get the recommended maintenance for your 07 at Toyota Parts and Service. Just enter your mileage from the dropdown.

It's a good idea to drain and fill the transaxle fluid every 40,000 miles--even though there is no specified interval. This recommendation comes from Yahoo Prius Technical group members who have sent the transaxle fluid in for lab analysis.

At 100,000 miles there are a few additional items:

    Spark plugs
    Brake fluid
Coolant change to both inverter and engine coolant circuits.

And there are the inspections as listed in the "Passport to Performance" pamphlet.

As an active member of that group, the current suggested refresh protocol of type WS Toyota ATF for 2004-2009 (and probably the newer ones as well) is a first refresh at 30k miles (The OP has been a bit overdue since 60k miles) and then each 60k miles thereafter (With indications that the interval can be safely extended a bit at higher odo readings).

My 2004 Prius is at 187k miles and has had the ATF refresh at 61k (ATF was about used up), 120k and 180k miles (ATF successively cleaner). So far it's all good.

Definitely get the Owner's Manual, either online or from a dealer. It's full of stuff you need to know.

Automatic Transmission Fluid - A 2004 or later Prius ONLY uses Type WS Toyota ATF. Others have suggested using Redline or Amsoil but they are just as expensive and until someone publishes long term used ATF testing using a good lab, I don't suggest that anyone experiment with their Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) transmission.

The Prius has a computer running two motors that fools the driver into thinking he has a CVT, there are no gear ratio changes at all going on in the transaxle. It is all spinning the motors at JUST the right speeds. But the result acts very like a car with a CVT.

Toyota chose to cool the motors and epicyclic gearset with a proprietary ATF.

Okay so I am going to have the ATF fluid done and maybe do it again at 100,000 because I put the first one off so long.

Anything else that isn't recommended but is a good idea to do? I am thinking about trying to get this Prius to 150,000-200,000 miles. When I retire I should have 170,000-180,000 and then I can start looking for a nicer car that I have wanted for a while. The prius is a great car but it just doesn't have the fun factor.....although I find getting 53 MPG at 65 on the highway a lot of fun. I will probably keep my little Prius anyway and get a 335i convertible a few years old(2010).

Thanks a lot for the help

Changing brake fluid tri-yearly is recommended by Honda for all their vehicles now. I've seen no mention of it in our Prius maintenance schedule, but it's likely a good idea. It's something I'd let the dealership do, and check if they have a pressurized system for automated brake fluid replacement.

Brake fluid is an interesting question, but I'd expect that it has a much longer life than in other cars due to it's lack of use. Our hydraulic brake system doesn't get engaged nearly as much. Not sure what the impact of plain old time has on brake fluid.

    BRAKE FLUID
Brake fluid is 'hygroscopic' that is it sucks moisture out of the air. Moist brake fluid boils at lower temps. Brake fluid will go bad quicker in wet climates, but there is a definite time element.

For us car idiots - do you follow the schedule by mileage, months, or whichever comes first?

Re: 2007 Toyota Prius Recommend Maintenance

If you are concerned about maintaining the powertrain warranty then you will observe the interval which comes first.

If you no longer are concerned about the warranty but wish to observe good maintenance practice and log few miles on the car, then you will change the engine oil at least once a year, or at the 5K mile interval, whichever comes first. If you use a quality brand full synthetic oil then you can observe once per year or 7.5K / 10K mile change intervals.
