Prii per Capita by State

Population should be licensed drivers or number of vehicle owned. Large urban areas like NYC with their large non driving or car owning populations distort these kinds of statistics.

 

Almost every thread where Prius owners comment on other Prius they see, I wonder how they are seeing other Prius. My claims that there are no 'other Prius' now make more sense. Driving to neighboring states does not help much, they fill out the rest of the bottom of the chart.

WA State ranks #1 and by better than a 50% margin over any other state. apparently this chart only shows private owners so it tells about half the story.

just because State, County and City governments are what they are, does not mean they also made a conscious choice to purchase the Prius. its not like they were forced to do....OH Wait!! WA state actually mandated that all state fleets purchase alternative fuel vehicles to reduce their carbon footprint years ago.

so lets get a REAL chart here!!

 

cant find it now, but read a report about 6 months ago where 54% of Priuses in the state are owned by State, Federal, City or County government agencies. WA state has been very proactive to reduce our carbon footprint for years.

the key reason we rank high for Prius ownership despite having no HOV (the ONLY reason VA, CA and DC rank anywhere) privileges is workers forced exposure to the Prius. they drove it, realized the benefit and went and got one of their own.

oh we are not complaining at all!! the more info the better and it is accurate for what it displays. cant blame one for showing civic pride. heck i root for the Seahawks!! that alone should show u how committed i am !

 

What data DO we have?

Hybrids per capita?

Hybrids per capita per state?

Hybrid miles driven per capita?

How about instead of per registered driver, we try and find out the hybrid percentage of all registered cars?

I can't believe Illinois is so far down the list, there are at least four on my block.

Don't take some of the reactions personally--that's the nature of these forums.

 

I would guess my province has a fairly high percentage of Prius ownership, too - especially taxis - but I don't have the stats to back it up.

edit: According to this article, hybrids make up 29% of the taxi fleet in BC. It's over 50% on Vancouver Island, and about a third in Greater Vancouver.

 

it breaks my heart that we are making all this fuss about hybrid vehicle population when we should be talking about bicycles per capita!

 

1) given the lax registration, you are never foing to get near the accuracy of this topic.

2) While everywhere is walking distance if you have the time, I am not 'commuting' 55 miles each way on a bicycle, with a 17 foot ladder.

 

you need a bicycle built for two!

 

Now that makes sense why I see so many Prius on the road where I am... Maryland, DC, and VA are in the top 10.

 

On the other hand, for some people, it *is* reasonable - especially since it:
1) Can mean you don't have to pay for a gym membership
2) Your exercise time and your commute time are overlapping - if you spend three hours commuting each day and another hour and a half exercising, why not just spend the time doing both at the same time!

One such group is here. One of my coworkers rides with that group regularly, about 42 miles, 3 days a week or so. The other days of the week, he takes Caltrain or BART a good portion of the way, and bikes the rest. There are a few who do the "long and scenic" route, instead - a good 62 miles, before work. Of course, being able to do something like this means that you have to live near public transportation or have an alternate means for those days that you can't ride. And you have to really want to do it - it's not easy. I know I wouldn't bike as far as he does daily - I also wouldn't want to live that far from work though - that's why I picked an apartment close to my office.

(Just so I'm clear - I'm not saying you should bike. Just sharing a story about a crazy guy. )
