Energy Now- New Light Bulbs (for Xmas?)

    In the D.C. region, we get a nifty Sunday AM energy TV show called Energy Now. Perhaps more of you can see it now on cable. Last week's show on light bulbs was very interesting. Some new LED bulb options look like good Xmas stocking stuffers to me. Also interesting was a GE hybrid bulb and other emerging options.

    If they can come up with a 100 watt equivalent under $10 they will really be on to something. Never understand why LED tech is so darn expensive now days. Guess it is the demand.

    Originally we huddled in the dark
    Then we domesticated fire and used candles and oil lamps
    They were replaced by kerosene and gas lamps
    And Edison invented the incandescent bulb

    Now incandescent bulbs are being outlawed to be replaced by Compact Florescent Lamps (CFL)
    Soon CFLs will be outlawed due to the mercury in them and they will be replaced by LED bulbs
    Then LEDs will be outlawed due to the arsenic in them and we will be back to candles

    Good addition Spidy, but at least candles are renewable but not kerosene, gas, or most oils (I guess whale oil passes muster). And we'll all huddle in the dark.

    This year they even took my fireworks away, and campfire. :( Well its because we are in severe drought with big winds, so I agree for this year.

    Outside the real fire risks, I can't see the huge savings that should give the governm't the ability to outlaw these things. Hey, I'm all for them adding social costs to our electricity, but if I'm willing to pay for my windmill and/or solar panels I should be able to light enough lights that can be seen in space.

    Get the government out of our lighting (other than labeling and safety).

    Its manufacturing and material costs. Larger sales will get rid of sales and marketing prices, and manufacturing costs go down like they do for all chips.

    Yikes arsenic, is that why the LED I burned up smelled so bad?
    I was trying to improve a book light (in an experiment that went bad).

    To me, the new law is coming in effect just a little too soon compared to quality/cost of the CFL, LED lights available.

    Expensive? :confused: Per lumen, they are quite cheap compared to a few years ago. And it was not many years before that, that blue and white LEDs were invented.
