Toyota revealed today that over 29,000 people have pre-registered for the 2012 Prius Plug-In on Toyota's website. It looks like they anticipate a conversion rate of about 50% on those registrations, with a sales outlook of at least 16,000 plug-ins in 2012. John Hanson told Bloomberg, “We think it’s going to be a strong seller and we’ll deliver to whatever level the market wants,” he said yesterday. “We’re certainly on line to sell 16,000 to 17,000 in 2012.” If Toyota is able to sell 16,000 Prius Plug-Ins in 2012, that will add an additional 10% to the normal Prius sales (140,000 in 2010). With anticipated sales of the Prius v adding another 20% to Prius sales, Toyota is all of a sudden looking at total 2012 Prius sales in the range of 185,000 cars. That's a lot of new Prii on the road. Toyota expects the Prius Plug-In to sell for $3,000 to $5,000 more than a standard version, which starts at $23,520, said Jana Hartline, a company spokeswoman. Hartline also added that the Prius Plug-In should qualify for a tax credit of at least $2,500. If that additional cost is closer to $3,000 than $5,000, there will almost be no reason to purchase a traditional Prius if given the option. And that's Toyota's plan for 2012: lots of Prius options. With 40,000 green stickers up for grab in California HOV lanes, Federal and State tax credits, 16,000 is conservative in my opinion. California alone will probably buy at least as many. I think Toyota will have difficulty keeping up with demands in all markets.

well it means they will have around 1.8k/month capacity for US alone (since it is launching in June), at least... and best part is Toyota estimates the price being 3k-5k more than Prius G3. Which is pretty darn sell-able.

    Another update:

As of today, we're actually over 31,000 Priority Registrations. But, if you haven't registered yet, there's still time (toyota.com/plugin).

Now, as for the other bits of info, you're probably reading a bit too much into the price reference and conversion rates of Registrants to sales. Keep in mind that loose dollar figure is something that's been kicking around since the Demonstration Program began, it's not necessarily reflective of our current go-to market plans. Lots of room for interpretation still, I know, but the exact info will be out soon enough!

Will Toyota be filling the orders in the order that pre-registrations have been received?

It's my understanding that they will be. But for an additional $20, perhaps a certain PriusChat Moderator can look into getting your named bumped up closer to the top.

So send me $20 and as far as you know I got your name bumped up. :D

    Sweet! :clap2:

Strong interest prior to rollout has really paid off in the past. This one will be especially exciting though, it bumps hybrid acceptance up to a whole new level.

Hmm.... from the above comment, sounds like nowhere close to $3k-$5k above a regular Prius. $40k from that statement? If so, I will be out.

More of these things on the road is, unequivocally, a good thang.

Tony I'll send you $20. Can it be in Borders gift cards?

Not quite right Tony....there is no particular place in line within the 31,000 Priority Registrants. But, being a Priority Registrant will get you first access to place your orders when the Online Order System goes live. Details on the Order System have not yet been released so you'll have to stay tuned for those.

Price point will make or break the rollout and toyota knows this. Once again the others will have to play catch up or get out of the game. NICE

So I'm reading into this, I think, whoever gets their order in first is who will get the early production. Not who registered first. Here that john1701a? You'll have to be pretty quick on the mouse to beat me. I'm hoping it isn't based on dealer volume.

^^ Erica did not actually say that the actual online order system will be FIFO. In previous iterations of Prius roll-outs, so called 'pioneers' gained early purchase by agreeing to buy the car sight unseen. The pioneer option was only offered to people Toyota thought highly motivated to buy the car, or influential consumers. Everybody else is submerged into Toyota's larger marketing plans.

Erica is just trying to keep the talk going. Do not read too much into the chatter.

Did something change? All the previous Toyota marketing materials have stated "Spring 2012" for the Prius PHV. It says Spring 2012 on the Toyota website: Toyota Prius Family

Wow - this is looking more and more like Leaf's ordering process. Just make sure you don't use Critical Mass as your software vendor ;)
