Production 2012 Prius Plug-In Set for Frankfurt Debut - 77% increase in MPG

    Our friends in the UK are reporting that the production version of the 2012 Prius Plug-In will be revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show September 15th. We're still not sure what kind of changes will be coming to the Prius Plug-In production version compared to the demonstration vehicle that we test drove last year, though I think we can safely assume that it will take on the styling changes coming with the 2012 Prius refresh that we've been hearing about. The production version will also most likely include full brake regen and user-selectable EV mode. Oh yeah... one other note of interest: UK publications are reporting that the Prius Plug-In will achieve 77% greater fuel economy than the 3rd Generation Prius, jumping from 72.4 mpg to 128.4 mpg.. That number may not translate here in the US, as the tests have been done on the European homologation blended cycle, but if it does then the Prius Plug-In could average 88.5 MPG. About 18 months ago, we reported that the Plug-In could achieve 75 MPG based on the EU ratings, so either the European test has changed or Toyota has changed something within the HSD system or battery pack to crank out the extra 13 or so MPG.     That 88.5 MPG ignores the electricity consumption. If we take account of it, the combined MPGe will be lower than 88.5.

    Remember, Volt is rated at 60 MPGe.

    Did they move the plug door? Perhaps it is on the other side since the model is RHD.

    LED projector headlights is confirmed for the PHV model then.

    MPGe applies to both EV and composite figures. Volt's EV is 93 MPGe. Gas is 37 MPG. Composite is 60 MPGe.

    Prius PHV's gas is likely 50 MPG. EV is probably more than even the Leaf since MG2 is less hungry and the car is lighter. Leaf's EV is rated at 99 MPGe. Prius PHV's EV should go above 100 MPGe.

    The tricky part is the composite figure. Since PHV's EV range is shorter, we don't know how many MPGe will increase from the base 50 MPG.

    For the Volt, the base 37 MPG boosted to 60 MPGe - 35 EV miles @ 93 MPGe boosted 23 MPGe.

    If the Prius PHV starts with the base 50 MPG, how much will the 14 EV miles @ >100 MPGe boost? If it boosts 10 MPGe then it would match the Volt. If the base gas MPG is 55 then it'll likely exceed the Volt.

    P240/50ZR16

    That's a wide tire! Wider than the 17" from Prius FIVE.

    That is a weird tire size! I say ditch it and go with a narrower tire and reap the MPG rewards! :p

    Seriously though, as long as they allow a blended mixed-mode EV use and allow the driver to decide when to use full EV mode then this thing will be a winner!

    Hrmm, I wonder if that's the equivalent of a Prius 5 with the LED headlights... it does have leather interior... if it weren't for the 16 inch wheels...

    Also, are those foglights integrated into the black grill in the front?

    That tire size sounds pricey, and detrimental to mileage. Nice wheel though: maybe they will come to their senses for the whole line, regarding the wheel covers on mags?

    OTOH, that wheel/tire might not be the final product.

    EPA unadjusted combined MPG for gen3 cordless is 70.8 MPG. UK's imperical gallon is larger than US gallon also.

    it is same engine, just different method of counting... UK driver gets exactly the same mpg you do.
