Maybe my math is way off, but there are 3.9 liters to the American gallon. 3.9 X 40 Km X .625 = 97.5 mpg. Now, what can a hyper miler do with that? I stand corrected: 3.785lgal. = 94.6

They're probably using an inflated Japanese test cycle.

Per Google (a great unit converter):
40 (km per litre) = 94.0858333 miles per US gallon
32 (km per litre) = 75.2686667 miles per US gallon

(Try Googling for these as examples:
40 km per litre in miles per us gallon
50 mpg in teaspoons per mile)

From Japanese ratings call Prius world's most efficient car, 89.4 mpg (US)! (for the 2010 Prius), they mention

38 (km per litre) = 89.3815417 miles per US gallon
32.6 (km per litre) = 76.6799542 miles per US gallon

 

50 MPG * 40/32 = 62.5 Approximate EPA MPG

 

gallon is 3.78L

 

OK, -I- think they're talking about the Prius C, aka hybrid Yaris. I -suspect- calling it a hybrid Yaris is wrong, but I have no facts. I DO like the looks of the "prototype" shown on the Toyota US site! And a friend here is looking to buy one and was told by the dealer it will be here in the Spring in small quantities.

So, taking the Japanese rating vs the US rating for the current Prius gives me a conversion factor of 50/76.7 = 0.65. Multiply that by the quoted figure for the new car you get 89.4*0.65 = 58.3 MPG US EPA estimate. A MUCH more believable figure! But be warned, I'm not so sure you can factor like this.

In these cases "caveat emptor" doesn't apply, rather "figures lie and lairs figure" fits better.

 

20% higher efficiency (40km vs. 32km per liter of gas) so it should get 60 MPG. It'll give Volt with 60 MPGe for a run for the money without having to plug it in.

 

thats 25% higher actually... and unlikely if they are going to keep the same powertrain.
So something is off here, most likely it is different powertrain.

 

from spy shots, not, they wont be same cars... in Europe, both will be sold. Just like Auris Hybrid and Prius and CT200h.

 

I think it is fair to assume the japanese car will be at least slightly different than the prius C. Your math does seem correct, but looking at the shape of the C from the prius website, we may assume that cd may not give as big of an improvement on the US test. Does anyone have a good estimate of CdA of the C verus the gen III prius liftback.

 

Disregarding any conversion factors and just using a comparitive ratio to guess the US fuel usage numbers...

Gen 3
32 km/l Japanese standard = 50 mpg in the US under EPA standards

2012 'baby Prius'
40 km/l Japanese standard ( 25% improvement ) should equal about 62-64 mpg in the US ... also a 25% improvement.

I'll bet a dozen donuts on this being very close to the number that's given to the new baby Prius.

 

i wonder if journalists made mistake of comparing different Japanese standards .

Because under old Japanese standards (10-15), Prius gets 38km/l. And if they actually used same drivetrain, 5% better mpg makes sense as thats what you get from losing some weight. But this will not be drastically smaller car (more like Auris than Yaris).

25% better means completely new technology.

 

I am sure this is Prius c... and that it is sized more like CT200h than Yaris (we all saw the spy shots and they are two very different cars /Prius c vs Yaris Hybrid spy shots).

As to the launch date - just remember Prius v. They want to stagger the launches to build up inventory. Prius+ is launching in Europe a year later than Prius Alpha in Japan.

 

According to this post New Toyota Aqua Gets 40 km/l - Debuts At Tokyo Motor Show in December | Integrity Exports it's based on a 1.5 liter ICE, so this is not the 3rd gen Prius powertrain.

 

I really want to see what original Nikkei article said because I think half of the things in English articles are probably not in it

 

Well, I remember hearing they were going to use the GII powertrain, updated, of course. So 1.5 l.
Or perhaps I just dreamt it.
