Has anyone seen additional details on the differences between the navigation capabilities on the Prius Plug-in, compared to the Prius Plug-in Advanced?

I've seen the information in the 2012 Prius PHV Product Info PDF (quoted below), but I'm not clear on the functional differences between the navigation system with or without the hard drive.

Sounds like 1/50th of an iPhone or Android phone. Not impressed.

It looks like the Standard trim "Display Audio with Navigation and Entune" gets traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks from the Entune app on your phone, while the Advanced trim "Premium HDD Navigation with Entune" gets that same type of information using XM Data Services.

Will the XM Data Services be included with an Entune services subscription (complimentary for first 3 years) or will it be separate subscription, such as the $9/month pricing for NavTraffic + NavWeather + Travel Link shown at www.siriusxm.com/travellink?

If XM Data Services must be subscribed to separately, does it include a 90 day trial (like XM radio) or a 3 year trial (like Entune)?

Can the "Premium HDD Navigation" system get that same information using the Entune app on a phone, in place of using XM Data Services?

I've been searching through www.toyota.com/entune for answers, but the Entune site is not the easiest to locate information on. I'm not sure if I'll end up any of these features since its pretty easy to lookup this type of information on a phone, but I'm still deciding between the Standard and Advanced trim levels and I'd like to know what I'm getting into before ordering the car.

It sure seems like a lot of the differences between the two Entune systems is 'just software'. Maybe the split display of the 7" screen is better set up for the advanced PiP applications, but it seems pretty lame to not at least let us 'poorer' customers get the full PiP experience.

I certainly think they would sell a lot more (and not just to technical geeks like me) when they open up sales to all states in 2013 if the basic model has all the PiP software goodies that make it fun to drive.

Sorry, late to the party, but a little birdie just tipped me off that this thread has some outstanding questions.

Display Audio with Navi/Entune, data services are not through XM, they are part of Entune. HDD Premium Navi with Entune--data services are through XM and will (like Entune) come with a 3 year trial period for the data services subscription. After that, you'd need to opt in to the XM data services subscription to continue to have data services on the HDD Premium Navi, getting them through Entune is currently not an option on this audio headunit. Now, it gets even more fun when we're talking about Plug-in because we'll also be offering some Plug-in Hybrid Applications as part of Entune on the Premium HDD Navi headunit. Those require a valid Safety Connect subscription (free 3 year trial included). These are not available on the Display Audio.

The screen differences and navi functionality are fairly significant differences between the two headunits. The Display Audio is a 6.1" screen, the HDD Premium Navi is a 7" split screen capable system that is much higher resolution. Both offer Navigation, but the Display Audio is more of a Tom Tom/Garmin like experience where as the Premium HDD Navi is more like our AVN that we've offered on Prius currently and in the past but improved.

Lastly, and I think I've hit all the questions, but let me know if I missed something, we wanted to keep Plug-in pretty simple in terms of an ordering strategy but also affordable. This simplicity helps keep the costs down for you and also helps us make sure we have the right car in the right place for the customer since our sales plan is relatively low. To do this, we limited our product to being offered two ways. To add all of those extra features from the Advanced model to the regular Prius Plug-in model would have brought the price way up and made this vehicle out of reach for many customers. If we hear a great cry for more variety, it may be something we look at for future MYs.

Are you saying that the navigation package of the standard trim PiP is a downgrade compared to what you could get as an upgrade in the Prius 3? Do I need to have service from my phone (be near a tower) to see the navigation maps in the standard trim?

Thanks for the answer. It seems like the data services the same between the Display Audio and the HDD Premium (i.e. you don't get better traffic data or whatnot w/ HDD Premium), but the Display audio gets it through a tethered cell phone while the HDD Premium gets it through XM. If I understand correctly, this means that if you can tether your cell phone, you'd have to pay extra for HDD Premium data through XM (after the 3 year trial subscription), while you would not with Display Audio (assuming you don't have to pay more for cell phone data), correct?

I guess XM satellite coverage is probably better than cell phone coverage in remote areas which is a benefit to going through XM. Are there any other pros/cons?

No, the navigation maps are stored on DVD. Phone internet service is required for data services such as traffic information.

Actually, neither the Display Audio or HDD systems use a DVD. HDD is, well, HDD and Display Audio is Flash.

I wonder if the Display Audio Navigation (of the standard trim) will be less desirable than the navigation package of my 2005 Prius. I sure hope not!

(Certainly the car will be better, at least!)

The interface is quite a bit different from the standard DENSO interface from the past. The HDD system is still DENSO so that is much similar to the "feel" of the older nav systems. It certainly shouldn't be less desirable given all the extra features, but it's all in the eyes of the beholder.

My 2005 maps are certainly getting rather outdated... :)

I have, for years, prided myself on my great deliveries for Prius and other cars with NAV... I know that system in the 2011 and older Prii like the back of my hand.

This new system is very hard to learn. And, we at the dealership level have very little training so far, so please excuse my lack of participation here. I can't seem to get the hang of this new system and really am going to just have to sit with a manual in my lap one day and work my way thru every single page. That's how I learned the all-new NAV in a Camry in 2001 (the 2002 Camrys were the first Toyota product to have NAV) so the all-new 2012 Camry getting the all-new Entune first was fitting.

ON a personal level, I wish I had more help in hands-on training for this system. :(

This is all very confusing to a first-time Prius buyer.

So help me understand. If I'm getting this right, after the first 3 years, in order to retain all the features, the ATP buyer will have to purchase subscriptions to (1) Entune, (2) XM, and (3) Safety Connect? Whereas the base model buyer won't have all the apps, but will just need Entune (?), which includes some of the services the ATP guy needs XM for?

It would be nice to have a matrix listing the features, which model(s) they're on, and which extra cost subscriptions they require. And while we're at it, whether the same information is available for free on my smartphone.

Are these subscription services priced now? I'd like to know if I'm going to have to spend all my gas savings to keep the features working on my $7000 in-dash display.

Downgrade in terms of resolution and size, yes. But it is a cheaper navigation unit than the HDD nav system.

Treat it as Toyota offering their normal Denso unit and a lower cost, Garmin-like interface.

No. Navigation is built into the car. You only need cellphone service for Entune Services on the base PHV.

It depends. It might be more desirable because you don't need XM Services for traffic and weather.

    Basically, yeah.

I really appreciate this strategy. Buying my 2010 was very complicated because of the four different trim levels plus special options plus accessories. I like your simplified approach. If you want to make Prius a real cult car, make it as dealer- and user- upgrade able as possible. Californians have loved this since the 1950's. Look how successful it is with Honda Civic.

But you still need to put the charging port back in the front, where it belongs.

I don't get it. I could get a better navigation unit on a 2012 Prius 3?! I almost am tempted to cancel my PiP. Very disappointing to spend that much more money and get less in MFD/navigation unit.

After reviewing the Toyota website, I admit I could find no mention of what type of the storage the maps use. Where did you find that the Display Audio is using Flash? I'm a little surprised that they would use Flash for the Display Audio and a hard drive for HDD Premium.

The Entune is free for THREE years. I would presume there will then be an Entune Subscription. I heard $5 a month for the base to $10 a month for the high end apps... for later on three years from now as a $ estimated for the continuation of the Entune.
