1. If it's like my 2010 "0 miles to empty" is between 9.5 and 10 gallons used.

As the Prius v manual states, the fuel tank holds 11.9 gallons.

There are probably a couple of reasons that when you drive it down to “range left is only 20 miles,” there is still apparently 11.9 – 9.5 = 2.4± gallons left. First, the HSD Computer uses “Average MPG” not the more or less instantaneous MPG you are getting at or around the point in time when you read the RANGE XXX MILES, and it says, “RANGE 20 MILES.” Second, no doubt, the Toyota engineers are using a conservative calculation to minimize the probability that the RANGE XXX MILES reading will show more miles of driving range left than is actually the case.

I am sure the Toyota lawyers signed off on this one. Toyota certainly does not want mass occurrence of incidents of “Sudden Running Out Of Gas” (ala their past “Prius, Sudden Unintended Acceleration” headache) in the new, Prius v station wagons across the U.S. and North America.

The “Vee” is a Caddy In A Kimono, just not one with LKA.

 

So what is the most fuel anyone has put in during a fillup so far? Mine (2nd tank) has been 10.86 gallons or so.

Also, has anyone run out of gas yet? If so, what was the max miles you achieved on it?

Filled up in Spokane on January 1, returned to Seattle later that day.
Wednesday the "Range" reached 0 miles, all bars on the fuel gauge gone.
Friday, 81 miles after reaching 0 miles range, the EV light kicked on in the upper half of the gauge, and the battery indicator rapidly dropped. 9/10 of a mile later I pulled into the local gas station and added 12.546 gallons. Pulling away, the range indicator now read 437 miles.

Total miles traveled on one complete tank (and a little battery) - 519.1
Dashboard estimate of MPG - 43.4
Actual MPG calculation - 41.4

This is my first Prius, and I'm still learning Hypermiling, etc.

 

Doing the math here, 437 + 81 = 518, which is durn close to 519. Ergo, the "range indicator" is just another trip meter... not sure how they come up with a value for a partial fill-up.

I am averaging 43.5 miles to a gallon. I took a picture of my mileage it's in my photos.

 

Perhaps the filler neck holds 0.6 gallons?

 

I have a question about fuel. Does my Prius v have a warning tone for low fuel?

 

The range indicator isn't an indicator of how far you can go until the tank is empty. It is an indicator for when you should fill up. Running your car out of gas is not good for the vehicle. Thus the engineers set the range for when you should fill up and set the light around 20 miles before you should fill up. With the light coming on at 20 miles, you should have adequate time to find a gas station and fill 'er up. The extra gas also acts as a reserve in case you cannot find a fill station. It acts as a buffer between you and being stranded.

I don't get the fascination with seeing how long you can go between fill-ups. Going x number of miles takes the same amount of gas whether you fill up ever 400 miles or every 450 miles.

 

I agree that you don't want to run until empty, but I know that on my 2004 Sienna the display actually says "DTE" or Distance to Empty which makes it even more confusing.

 

By slowly filling up the neck, I have got as much as 11.4 gallons in. However, I have noticed the estimate of the remaining miles left is based upon how many miles you got on the last tank (at least it starts with that). I've not seen it go up very often. My highest miles in a tank so far has been 467.

 

my guess is that they are reading the position sensor of the fuel gauge... and as most of us have experienced... the top half of the tank always seems to last longer than the bottom half of the tank. mostly due to shape - but also as above mentioned - people that stuff the tank full up to the top of the filler tube ... your first 50 miles haven't even pulled gas from the tank yet - you're just draining the filler neck. one would think that would throw off the mpg display. though they may actually calculate that off of the fuel injector meetering...hard to say..

another note on low fuel - i don't recommend much below a 1/4 tank. here's why ...
the electric fuel pumps are for the most part, in tank pumps nowadays. those little motors are liquid cooled by the fuel in your tank.... when you constantly run low on fuel - your pump is not being cooled by a jacket of fuel - thusly - you could prematurely wear out your fuel pump. just a thought.

 

Hmm...interesting. I love to run my tank down for satisfaction purposes, but, can anyone confirm that:

1) The Prius V's fuel pump is integrated into the fuel tank?
2) It's cooled by the fuel?
3) At what level on the fuel gage the pump would no longer be cooled by the fuel?

 

Russ, this is my experience based on GM cars that I've driven ... and the fact that my dad has been a mechanic for 40+ years. With that said ... I wasnt clear above, i'm not saying your car - but meant to generalize that most fuel injected cars these days have in-tank fuel pumps. I just ordered my v ... so i'm not that familiar with Toyota personally, but will be soon. best regards...

 

so today I was feeling like crap on the way into work so I didn't feel like stopping to get gas. I ended going 10 miles past the "0 miles" range. I ended up putting in 10.679 gal at the station after work. Thinking 600+ miles might not be out of the realm of possibilities.

 

Curious - did your engine cut out at all - were you entirely EV at that point? I have run down till the orange indicator comes on - but had that 1 last bar before fueling - and I usually put in about 10.2xx in my tank.
It holds 11.2 i think according to the manual - so that tells me I should of had about another 40 miles to go ...
obviously that would not be good to run completely out - but - in a pinch - i could of went a little further.
