This review loses a little credibility for me when the reviewer refers to the small shifter on the Prius as "silly" and thinks a standard shifter makes the C a "real car". How childish. There is no point at all in having a large shift lever on a Prius. The small jewel-like shifter does the job beautifully. Also, the sluggishness of the C is not an insignificant problem, at least to people like me who cannot enjoy driving the Prius unless in Power mode. Also, why is the mileage of the C not much better than the liftback Prius? It should be.

Childish? Really? It was simply the writer expressing his preference and opinion. Calling that childish just because it doesn't mesh with your point of view seems a little, well, childish :p

I think it is childish to say a car needs a standard shifter to be a real car. The expression "real car" is what evoked the word "childish".

Edmunds is know to dislike Prius "gear" shifter ever since 2003 (Gen II review). Old dog can't learn new tricks.

I didn't even know that <40mpg was even possible. I would really like to see just where and how they drove that car.

I think a good thing to take from this review is the MPG #'s. They averaged 49 MPG over 900 miles on the 16" tires. From what I've read the larger tires will return a little worse gas mileage than the standard 15" ones. They also said in the review that they don't ever try to get good mileage, they just drive the car normally. Plus they were running acceleration tests, etc that are bound to take a hit on the gas mileage. So coming from that, 49 MPG is pretty good. (Plus they averaged 58 in full city driving)

Everybody know the Prius gets rubbish real-world mileage and an M3 is more fuel-efficient.

I am becoming less and less convinced of upgrading to a c from my 2010...I could realistically save ~$10 a year in fuel? ;-) The main reason I want to upgrade is because Toyota is not honoring one of their TSBs, the one pertaining to the cold soak knock (of course, who knows what kind of undiscovered manufacturing defects exist in the c).

Again, it was simply the writer expressing his personal opinion and preference for something that makes up part of his "real car" experience. Just because you don't happen to agree doesn't make his point of view childish. It's just a subjective opinion.

Well, I think complaining, that Eoin is being childish for expressing his subjective opinion that the article author is being childish for expressing his subjective opinion, is the most childish.

That is just my subjective opinion.

Hey, that makes ME even more childish. Score! I win.

Yeah, except that I wasn't complaining as you can see from the good natured sticking out of the tongue I gave him in the beginning :D. I just think we've all become a little too intolerant of others opinions and we'd be better off if people just relaxed a bit more. Carry on...

49 MPG from Edmunds testing is very impressive. I can't wait to see how much Consumer Reports will get.

When you can figure out how to express intolerance for the intolerance of others, without actually expressing intolerance yourself, let me know.

Considering the shifter is a number of Hall Effect sensors wired to the mechanical backside of the shifter, having a bigger hunk of shifter is meaningless. It is not shifting mechanical linkage as in years long past. It's a electrical switch assembly. The reviewer gets a big ZERO for not even knowing that about the car...if you can't figure out the most basic of systems, how is he going to relate to something actually complex..... and then present it to the public with some, any credibility!

I've been caught in a vicious downward spiral ;). Who knew Prius owners were so sensitive about their (jewel-like!) gear shift levers?

There is a term for advanced technology imitating old technology - a good example is the fake shutter sound you get in a digital camera. Another would be the fake car sound new Priuses will have. There is no good reason for the Prius shifter to imitate a mechanical shifter except nostalgia, which the edmunds reviewer has obviously succumbed to.

    and probably many others.

we should be happy it got reviewed so well. Floor mounted shifter is simply bringing Prius to the masses. It makes it more normal car.
