I know many people want to see this. I wanted to see it myself when the pre-production cars were out and about. So I thought I'd try to capture some video this morning.

    A few things:

Since I had to keep my eyes on the road ;) I wasn't really too good about keeping it at maximum EV acceleration. The first time I tried, after I got going, I glanced at the HSI and saw I had some room so I got on the throttle a bit more. You can see in Attempt 1, I ended up starting the ICE at about 46MPH. I never got it into the PWR range, but I guess just being at the very edge of PWR for a little bit was enough to start the ICE.

On my 2nd Attempt, I wasn't as aggressive on the throttle since I didnt want to start the ICE. Really though, I'm not sure how much faster it would've gotten to 50MPH had I been more aggressive and for demonstration purposes, I think its adequate.

The car is definitely not a street racing machine. But I think there is definitely enough acceleration in it to keep up with traffic. I think people in my 'hood are also more aggressive from traffic light to traffic light too, so YMMV.

Attempt 1 (ICE starts at 46MPH)

    Attempt 2 (no ICE)

Also, I have my speakers on my laptop turned all the way up and I cant really hear anything. But I didnt remove the audio or anything. Its just really quiet. There is a bit of wind noise in the 2nd video when I get close to 50MPH.

Thanks for taking the time to record, and for sharing so quickly, I love it. Seems like a smooth yet powerful acceleration.

I see MPG dropping from 100 to around 50 at 46 MPh, is that how you find out that ICE is running (apart from noise/vibration)?

I actually didnt even notice that the engine came on. I wasnt really watching (keeping my eyes on the road n' all), but after I came to the next light, I heard the engine running (admittedly, I was a little sad). But while I was accelerating, I didnt feel it come on or anything.

The other way to tell is there's that "white EV car" icon. When the engine is on (or being used at least), the white EV car icon goes away.

Attempt 1 - I didn't notice the gas engine came on. I had to watch the video 5 miles to see the EV light on the HSI (right) went off. In the left, it still says you are still in EV mode. I guess that won't change unless you press the HV/EV button.

Love the acceleration sound! 0-40 mph in 10 seconds. Plenty enough for city driving.

Thanks. It looks really good for getting to 35mph. I don't think you will irritate anyone from driving too slow there.

Definitely looks like it needs some gas if you are trying to get to 55 or faster. Is that your experience? Even if it uses a little gas to accelerate to higher speeds, this should only be a small amount.

In the first video, you went 0.1 mile (2.4 to 2.5) and the battery range dropped by 0.7 miles (11.2 to 10.5).

If you used gas blended to accelerate, I wonder how much range it'll drop.

That would require 24 kw sustained. The max discharge of the battery is at least 27 kwh, so he was loafing ;)

Hmm.. never thought about that.. I'll try that on the way home if I can.

Thank you so much! This is exactly the video I've been looking for!!

My questions have been around how the Production PiP performs on EV Only acceleration vs. the Demonstrator PiP. I've been reviewing htmlspinnr's YouTube (test #6) to compare and in a very unscientific off-the-cuff review it looks to me like the Production PiP may be a full second quicker to get to 30 MPH than the Demonstrator...perhaps due to the reduced weight of the Production model. My timings may be off so I'd appreciate other PC user's thoughts. :cheer2: Thanks again for the video!!

I also noticed that but I was suspicious of the range estimator algorithm. I know there is reduced efficiency with increased current flow for more power but I didn't think it would be that great. It would be better if we had access to an energy gauge to see how much KWh dropped as a result of the strong acceleration instead of the remaining EV range.

    Thoughts?

I wouldnt say it needs gas to get up to 55. I've accelerated in EV up to the point where the ICE starts (62mph or so). But at the same time, you probably wouldnt want to try to accelerate onto the freeway in EV only. I think as I get used to the car more, I will settle into a routine where I will be better able to identify when I should use HV mode and when I shouldn't. The past few days have just been mostly experimenting and testing based on many of the things I have read here

It was my impression before that going from 30-60mph "felt better" than 0-30. It feels like that first 0-10mph or so its the slowest. But that may just be in my head. I guess I need to get it on video so USB can pick it apart for me :D

Yea, with Torque Android app or ScanGauge II, we can see the battery state of charge. That'll be more accurate.

The remaining range will tell us the ball park. How much battery range he can save by accelerating with gasoline and then he can use it some other time like stop and go traffic.

Not likely weight, I think toyota increased the max power coming from the battery. Ken said it is 38kw on the japanese model, I'm not sure if that is true on the us version.

Thanks. I remember on my test drive the prius sounded like it was accelerating faster than it was because the engine was making such a racket compared to my last car. I suspect its the quiet that makes you think you've slowed down.

Give me some more time behind the wheel and to get a better feel for the car. I need that extra 3kwh :D.

Good post, this is the kind of info thats interesting to discover.

As noted, EV range decreased faster than actual distance traveled under a "heavy" acceleration load.
It would be interesting to note if EV range increases for actual distance traveled under light loads or "gliding" in EV mode !

You're right the additional power should make a difference, that's true. Although I believe I did notice that the Production PiP is about 200 lbs lighter than the Demonstrator PiP. Both adjustments to the Production model should improve it's performance...

It is in your head. 0-10 mph took 2 seconds. 0-20 mph took 4 seconds. 0-30 mph took 6 seconds. See the linear acceleration of 2 secs per 10 mph?

0-40 took 10 seconds so it took 4 seconds from 30 to 40 mph. 0-50 took 14 seconds -- again 4 seconds to gain 10 mph more.

You are correct. The weight difference should be the biggest factor. The prototype is also to have 38kW power from the SAE article.

In the plug in Prius does the ice have to turn (without fuel) above 45 mph similar to regular prius to avoid generator overspeed??

Back in August 2010, I recorded this with the early model PHV...

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxbHPCr-K-Y"]Prius PHV - First Commute - YouTube[/ame]

...which coincidently the engine stayed up until 50 MPH climbing up that highway ramp.

Thanks for the video! I can't wait to try that myself.
