At a minimum, it says manufacturers do well to ride the coat tails of their similarly manufactured products.

More interesting question is will the PiP outsell the Leaf, Volt, and all other Plug-ins combined like the Prius has over 50% market share?

Uh. Imagine a title of the new F150 outsold all hybrids and EVs in the first 1 day of sales.

This is no different. Now if Toyota has the Rav4EV and has similar title, then that is news. This is just a slow news day by the editor.

The prius c really isn't a coat tails product, they are just using prius for branding. The prius v, is though really a wagon version, so it is a coat tails product. Granted yaris hybrid would not sell as well, but a different name might.

People have been asking for a lower priced hybrid for years, and this should sell well in the US and Japan. The styling gets some buyers that don't like the prius look. With gas prices going higher, people are shifting to smaller cars, and willing to pay a premium price for a premium product. The key minimums are room for 4, and comfortable front seats. Having a smaller lighter car can improve handling, one of the prius weak points, although the prius c might not improve enough. Saw a chevy sonic comerical last night, and watched because it was so weird seeing a car bungee jumping. Sonic is truly a crappy name, but it sells anyway. If chevy can sell 7900 of these small econoboxes in february, toyota should be able to do well with a small hybrid. The question remains if toyota imports enough here, or if shortages cause greedy dealers to scalp customers.

Isn't the Prius c more comparable to the Insight in size and price? Perhaps that is the most apt model to compare sales figures with (and never, ever end a sentence with a preposition).

I think the New iPad outsold the Volt and Leaf in three days as well. Seriously, must have been a slow news day.

I don't consider the Prius v a failure, even though I am one of those 'larks' who bought one.

I do believe that the Prius v is definitely a niche market, just as the Volt and Leaf are. And even despite the craptastic commercial campaign they had for the Prius c, I think the c's success is probably due to the pricetag more than anything else. A hybrid that does the high mpg but a decent cost is probably why the Volt and Leaf aren't looking too great initially. The problem is more the lack of the subsidies information in general and perhaps also the uncertainty of the charge points. Initially, people looking at the Volt or Leaf, you don't hear about the subsidies unless you ask around.

Insight is a bad selling car for many reasons. The fit hybrid is the closest car. It isn't sold in the US, but it is in Japan. The markets are are quite different though. I expect the prius c to sell really well here:), but not as well as it does in japan.

This is a response back to GM because GM compared Volt's sales to the Prius sales back from a decade ago.

Toyota is saying, hey we just introduced a new Prius model and it is how it stacks up against the Volt. Prius c has more interior room than the Classic Prius, more horsepower (just 1hp), faster (265 lbs lighter) and more fuel efficient (41 vs 50 MPG).

All three cars do have green cred in common. EPA rates them by CO2 emission per mile that includes tailpipe emission and beyond. Punch in a zip code in this calculator and it'll tell you CO2 gram/mile.

    1) Prius c (50 MPG) - 222 gram/mile
    2) Leaf - 230 gram/mile (national average)
    3) Volt - 260 gram/mile (national average)

To compare to a regular ICE car:

    Cruze Eco auto (31 MPG) - 358 gram/mile
    Cruze Eco manual (33 MPG) - 335 gram/mile
    Jetta TDI auto (34 MPG) - 379 gram/mile.

Keep in mind that non-CO2 gas emissions were converted to CO2 equivalent. That's why Jetta TDI CO2 number is much higher despite being more efficient.

Clearly, Prius c has the least carbon footprint and you doesn't need to plug it in. It is all in one attractive package. If you want to go green, there is nothing that can beat the Prius c.

Prius c has lower carbon footprint in some states and on average but is higher in west coast states (e.g. cali) or most east coast states (e.g..NY) or compared to people don't pay for renewable. In some places nothing beats it, except buying renewables. In other places even just using the grid, its not as green a a EV.

Prius c will not sell that much in the usa, i dont think it can reasonably do better than 5k a month UNLESS, price of gas goes over $5 and above and stays that way.. then anything is possible.

I think what will sell a lot is if they bring Corolla Hybrid to the states. New version is coming and is built for world wide markets for sure. Since Corolla is built in the USA, it will be priced right and something that people already know and expect, those that cant stand Prius right now.

Prius is still in class of its own, it has some unique benefits that cars like Yaris Hybrid or Camry Hybrid dont have, and it will always be a bit more fuel efficient than them.

The problem with the Corolla is the demographics. Those looking at a Corolla want basic, reliable transportation (XRS model not included). Heck, that was reason I looked at a Corolla a few years back. If there was a choice between a Camry Hybrid and a Corolla Hybrid, I'd personally choose the Camry. Of course that doesn't mean everyone else would but I'm thinking a Matrix Hybrid may be a bit better. The hatchback configuration allows better packaging of the battery and electronics and if they can offer 4WD-i, it would help bring more people in (esp. since the cheapest AWD hybrid is the Highlander at Cdn$44k). It'll take a stab at the Impreza and Legacy market.

But then, I don't have a marketing degree or have access to focus groups so what do I know? :D

You keep saying that, but that dog won't hunt. Do you have some focus group or expertise I should know about? Sonic is doing great in the b-segment which is growing. Corola hybrid isn't really differentiated in any positive way versus the camry hybrid and prius. Which customer demographic will buy a corolla hybrid versus the aqua, prius, or camry.
And I thought the prius c and prius got exactly the same 50mpg combined on the us test. Seems like there is a choice now between two different body styles in the US and japan at least. :)

best selling car in the world, because it is basic reliable transportation. Putting a hybrid in it moves it out of its demographic in the US. The average age of US corolla drivers was over 50 the last time I saw them. Toyota is trying to expand the hybrid market to younger drivers in NA. I am not sure about the ROW.

The auris hybrid is pretty much a matrix hybrid. They could bring it over, but it is really close to the prius. You could be right about a 4wd, but it needs to not add much to the price.

You sound like you understand the american market better than spwolf:) I think my MBA at least qualifies me to look at the numbers:cool:

I imagine hybridized versions of most cars will become standard over the next fifteen years or so to meet the new cafe standards, if a Republican president and congress doesn't repeal them. But unless they get a major aerodynamic facelift the Prius will still lead the pack in fuel efficiency!

    Is that really the reason?

Diesel has higher carbon content and thus burning a gallon of it produces more CO2 than burning a gallon of gasoline. See http://web.archive.org/web/20110719090649/http://www.epa.gov/oms/climate/420f05001.htm.
