auto door locks when leaving car

    I've noticed that a lot of people are talking about the auto door lock feature for when you get in the car, I'm looking for a feature that will auto lock the car when you get out of the car. I believe I read somewhere that the new BMW 7-series has a push button key fob similar to the prius but a major difference is that when you are within a few feet of the car, it auto unlocks and when you turn the car off and walk away, the car automatically locks.

    I am enjoying the fact that all I have to do is pull the handle and the car unlocks but I am wondering if there is anyway that I can have "no interaction" auto lock when I walk away.

    I get that there is that button on the handle that I can press when I walk away and it locks the car but is it possible to get even more lazy? I'd like to be able to turn the car off, open the door, exit the car, shut the door, walk away, car locks by itself, end of story.

    For me it is not so much about being lazy but the fact that we are human and forget things sometimes that worries me. Some day, I might forget to push the lock button. It would indeed be nice if the doors locked automatically within a certian timeframe from powering off and leaving the car.

    I agree. My previous car had your normal "key in the ignition" setup so when I turned the car off, the key was in my hand and it made it almost impossible to forget about locking the door. Now with the key lost in my pocket somewhere, I forget about it and walk away. Plus I've found that with my old car, even if I was leaving the car with my hands full, I'd still always have the key in my hand so when I shut the door, I locked it. Now that I have the hand open, I use it to carry more stuff out of the car and so I simply forget to lock the car behind me.

    I like the touch on the handle to lock, I have my horn and chrip silenced so you cant hear it, but The lights flash.

    My new 2008 is silent too. I'd like to get the beep back. How do I manage that?

    Hmm...so it doesn't autolock after a set period of time outside the range of the Fob?

    That would be nice IMO.

    I had an old key autolock that had a 30 second timer, that autolocked once the vehicle was turned off and if a door was opened and shut. I really liked that feature.

    Kept me from worrying about the vehicle being locked if I was in movie theater, or just sitting there trying to remember if I had remembered to lock it.

    With all the "Auto" control of a SKS I'm surprised this isn't an option.

    I've noticed that if I unlock the car with the key fob, but don't open the door within a certain amount of time (ex: someone comes up to me and starts talking, forgot something in the apartment, etc.) it will autolock. But once I've opened and closed the door, it'll remain unlocked.

    The autolock when driving is pretty cool.

    There is something showing on the customization page 66, 597. Doors will be automatically locked in options, 60s 30s 120s or OFF this feature when door are all closed. But I was following the manual to change my setting with disabling auto-unlocking all doors when I press " P" and all doors being unlocked when power off and driver's door is opened.

    I'd love to have this as a user/dealer configurable option. I'd also like for it to be able to detect the car has been idle for a long enough time and auto close the windows and sunroof if they're still open. Also user/dealer configurable for those who dislike their cars thinking for them. :)

    (blah blah liability of windows closing on things). Have it start beeping and build in collision detection, if it doesn't already have it. Collision detection for the windows wouldn't be a bad feature to have in any car.

    Here is a scenario that an auto lock function will cause legal problem.
    If a car is on fire, the driver leaves the car and run away with the FOB. The passengers will be trapped inside and burn to death. Note that some cars can only unlock the doors with the master button on the driver's door.

    No, the feature is that when you press the unlock button on your fob, but you don't open any doors in the period, it will auto lock your doors. :mad: not perfect.

    That is not a good example.

    The lock period is programmable. If the car is on fire and the driver leaves the car. What are the chances of someone sitting in the car for the 20 second delay? If a fireman walks up to a car on fire with the doors locked he breaks out the windows.

    or you can simply make it so that you can pull the door handle from the inside and it unlocks the car. the fact is that these cars are really just a huge computer. it is all code and programing. just like how you can make your PC at home control your house and do full automation. you just write the correct program. I have to think that a car whose main feature is the technology and the computer that runs it should be smart enough to solve all the concerns listed. if liability was really a major issue, nothing would ever be accomplished. when you walk into best buy, the doors open for themselves. what if the sensor dies and it shuts on someone and kills them. obviously there are safety features that prevent that from happening and the same style of safety features can be implemented here.

    basically this vehicle should be able to do everything but fly. it just needs to be programmed to do so. if there is something that will be a safety issue then a code is written to prevent it. easy. problem is that the people who can actually get in and manipulate the code correct are on the other side of the world and don't care what we want.
