I traded in a 2005 Prius with the navigation package on a new 2012 Prius Four with the Solar Moonroof. I really love it, but I'm finding the navigation quite different from the old one, and there are a few questions I can't find an answer to in the owner's manual.

Is there some way to make the guidance less... chatty? It Really doesn't take endless repetitions of "wait for the beep," etc. I get it. How do I shut it up?

My old Prius had voice commands "suspend guidance" and "resume guidance" but I can't find anything similar in the new one.

When I ask it to find POI categories, is there a way to show icons on the map instead of listing them? That's what my old one did and that was way more convenient.

How do I make a screen other this the map the default screen? Or, even better, how do I get it to just stay on the last screen I displayed?

Any help is appreciated! I took it for a nice long spin today and these were the things that really bugged me.

Are there no answers to these questions? Am I stuck naming my new baby "Chatty Cathy?"

I found the screen reset setting. And I'm going to turn on extended commands and see if that helps. Any other guidance?

I was playing with it on my 2012 P3 which is the poor man's 6" Nav. I could turn guidance off or turn and turn the voice volume down to near inaudible.

Mine was near inaudible and I was turning it up. The Ford Hybrid nav had option for tone or voice or none and it would interrupt the radio, CD, iPod Music.

That was a nice feature. With the Prius, with music going, the voice has to be way up to hear it but then if music is off the voice is way too loud.

On mine, the music cuts out when the voice speaks, so I can always hear it.

I stand corrected! (Or sit, as the case may be.)

Tonight the voice came on to tell me about weather to the south and the music did NOT cut out. The voice was hard to hear.

I found the setting that stops the incessant prompting.

I still haven't found a way to stop the guidance or display POIs on the map without pushing buttons.

For the first, I've tried stop guidance, suspend guidance, pause guidance, please stop guiding me, and even shut up. Nothing works.

Just press the voice button on your steering wheel to go to the next prompt if you already know what it is going to ask.

Suspend Guidance works only if you're under Route Guidance.

For the voice prompts, you can press the VOICE button to skip the guidance. If you want to turn it off, go to SETUP --> VOICE --> Voice Recognition Guidance --> Off.

All you will hear from now on is just the beep.

As for POI, you have to setup what POIs you want to display. Then the SHOW POI command will work. (It just shows all the POIs that you've put into the Show POI list.)

I haven't tried asking it to show specific POIs that I don't regularly use.

Thank you for your response! (my 2005 was a Tideland Pearl)

By "under Route Guidance" do you mean with the map displayed and it actively guiding to a destination? I can't get it to work even then. It just says it doesn't understand.

That helps! It's not exactly what I wanted but it will work OK. :D

    Thanks again for the pointers.

    Np! Yay! A Tideland sibling!

Yes, by "Route Guidance", I mean that you've set a destination and the navigation system is guiding you there. Suspend (or pause) Guidance just stops it (but stores the destination in memory so that you can "resume guidance" and continue navigating to your destination).

OK. I'll set a destination today and try Suspend and Resume again. Keep your fingers crossed.

BTW, Tideland was the best color ever, in my not so humble opinion! But I'm pretty happy with Sea Glass.

Sounds good. The only thing is that your route guidance on the map (the blue line that outlines the route to your destination) will also disappear.

I agree :D. It's a mysterious colour, looking green sometimes and grey at other times.

Well, I think I may have solved this mystery. I pulled the owners manuals for the 2011 and the 2012, and the voice command list on the 2012 "Premium HDD Navigation" system is missing all of the navigation/map commands other than "find nearby," "enter an address," "go home," and "destination by phone number." All of those goodies like "zoom in" and "suspend guidance"... just not there. If I want to do any of those things, I have to take my eyes off the road so that I can push buttons.

Also, although I have an idiot light to tell me that a tire is low, because I have "Premium HDD Navigation" I apparently don't have the screen that shows me *which* tire, or what the pressure in my tires is.

Really Toyota? Really? [IMG] This is "premium"?

Really? That's odd. Why would they remove all those voice commands, especially if most of them are locked out.

It does have the tyre pressure readouts on the Camry Hybrid XLE that I drove.

No idea. I only really want suspend/resume guidance. Why would that be missing?

The tire pressure readouts are under a button labeled "car." But I don't have that button because I have the premium sound system. I have a button "info apps," but there's no tire pressure info anywhere that I can find. I am puzzled.

I'm not familiar with the 2011 nav, but I have the same complaint about the 2012 HDD premium nav - the voice command set is incredibly limited! Pretty pathetic for a "high tech" car. So you're saying in 2011 the cars with nav had more voice commands? Why in the world did they get rid of a lot of them??

In 2005 there were more voice commands. I could do almost all of the map function, except setting a destination, by voice. Now I can set a destination verbally, but I can't do anything else. It's truly pathetic.

I just got off the phone with Toyota Customer Experience, and what I suspected is, indeed, correct: If you have the "premium" HDD nav system, no tire pressure display is available, the list of available voice commands is very short, and you can pause/resume guidance only by taking your eyes off the road to push buttons.

When I asked why, I was told, "It's a different system."

When I asked if Toyota would consider a future upgrade to enable those features, since they are available on the non-premium nav system, the answer was, "If we do you'll probably be notified."

    So, that's my answer.

Unfortunately I learned this EXACT thing this morning while talking with Lexus Customer Service. It appears from reading posts here and over in the Club Lexus forums that sometime in the last couple of years or so the Toyota/Lexus software engineers have made some poor choices regarding the NAV firmware.

2013 Lexii NAV = Bad, Bad, Bad!!! | PriusChat

The 800# for Lexus Customer Service is 1-800-255-3987
The 800# for Toyota Customer Service is 1-800-331-4331

Hopefully with enough targeted complaints the "Suspend Guidance", "Resume Guidance" and muting of guidance during phone calls will return in the next firmware release.

Ohhh for those of you getting lost while making a phone call please try leaving your map screen up and follow the turns displayed on it. Or if you have a HUD follow the turns there. These should still be available while on the phone. If not add it to the list of fixes for the next firmware release. Kind of sad that our almost decade old NAV's in Ema and Myrtle are more user friendly than the 2013 revision.

    Happy driving,
    Chris
