When you replaced your HU, and you have you car setups the way you like them, light, alarm, things like that, via the head unit controls, do they go back to default setting or do they stay the way you set them up when the new HU is installed? In other words do the setups remain in the HU or go to the car central computer and reside there? Is there a plug-in user interface that can be used to make changes later?

Hello, I can't speak about the 2012 Prius, but I can comment on the 2011 because I own one (Model III w/ JBL 8 speaker system) (which I ripped out and replaced, lol) and did remove the Factory JBL non nav HU and replaced it with a Kenwood DDX719. I didn't have to change anything back regarding lights, alarm or anything of that nature. I did lose steering wheel controls for adjusting radio volume and such. I was also able to use my factory XM antenna (with an adapter that I bought from the radio store.)

Don't know if this helps or not. But anyway, welcome ^^:welcome:

There is a member in the C forum that claims that when he switched out his stock HU, he preserved the steering wheel bluetooth functionality with some sort of adapter he installed. Do you think there are any ways to preserve the volume/track/mode selection functions?

I fitted a Sony XNV-770BT and have retained all the steering wheel controls. Pretty much any head unit you choose should either have an adapter to all ow the steering wheel controls to work or have an integral interface for them, as the Chinese units do.

That is interesting, as many installers from the shops that I've been to has been telling me that you cannot preserve any factory steering wheel controls/usb/aux ports with any aftermarket HU. Guess they didn't know what they were talking about. :noidea:

You're right, they didn't know what they were talking about!

So far my 2010 Prius has had a Chinese generic head unit (which had a built-in steering wheel control interface that worked OK), a Kenwood (that worked just fine with the same aftermarket steering wheel control interface as I am still using, but which didn't have BT) and the Sony.

It looks like the nice metra harness for preserving the steering wheel controls and aux input for the 2003 through 2011 radios (METRA 70-8114) is no longer valid for the 2012.
I believe the addition of the USB input is why. I suspect the steering wheel controls and aux inputs are coming into the radio through the new 2012 28 pin radio plug.

Without the easy to install metra harness the wires can still be manually spliced into the 2012 harness

Does anyone happen to have a 2012 wiring diagram for the stock base radio?

I'd also be interested in the 2012 wiring diagram. I'm starting to plan my upgrade to a basic PIP. I'm going the route of leaving the stock HU and using an MS-8, 6 channel amp, speakers, and a sub.

Wait, are you talking about aftermarket HU functioning with stock steering wheel controls or aftermarket steering wheel controls?

Now they've updated the GPS firmware it's pretty good, probably the best HU I've owned. They did have a serious problem with it though - I went for around 3 months with an almost unusable GPS, for some reason the thing just kept losing lock, something that could only be fixed by resetting the GPS module. This seems to have been fixed with a firmware update that came out a few weeks ago, though.

Glad to hear! I know all about the problem and for what it's worth I apologize. (I work as a Sony car audio tech rep)

Wait for the new 701HD I think you'll be impressed!!

    Hmm, nice advert, Ajtozzi.
I hope Sony will focus more for tablet based interface instead to try invent their own wheel.

The new 701 and 601 are all Linux based with more of a "tablet" feel to their GUI. I just got my pre-production 701 yesterday and I will be installing it in my Prius this weekend.
