    Hi All,

    I sincerely apologize if this is a repeat question but the only other threads I found on the topic were really old.

    I recently bought a 2007 Prius and the nav DVD it came with was quite old (U31 D - maps dated 2007).

    Are all of the newer nav DVDs for that model car also named U31? What's the latest DVD version that's available now?

    Thanks.

    I can't help with the latest version of the built-in map DVD, but I can suggest that you look into a standalone GPS instead of updating the map DVD - you can get one for much less than the map DVD update, and many come with free lifetime map updates. True they are less convenient/built-in, but the cost savings are significant over many years.

    Call your dealer and see what they charge for the map DVD update, as I recall it's around $250. You can buy a very nice GPS from Garmin, TomTom, etc for less than that.

    The 2013 update for the Nav DVD should be coming out soon if not already out. Call your dealer and inquire and they should be able to give you the correct part number for your 2007 and the current cost.

    The latest price that I have seen for the updated DVD was $169. Not cheap but I prefer the built-in GPS unit over an externally mounted one. My GPS unit works just fine.

    Yes, at $169 it's less of an issue.

    Version 5.1 indicates 2005. Toyota typically comes out with the annual update in the October time frame. The newest version will be 13.1 for 2013.

    Your dealer should be able to tell you when the 13.1 version will be available.

    There are a great many versions of the DVD, buying one at random is unlikely the be the version that fits a 2007.

    This is why every single helper mentioned going through a dealer. (then it is their problem if they order the wrong one)

    Version 13.1 is apparently just released, I just saw an auction on eBay for a disc which seems genuine (selling for $140), not sure if I am allowed to post a link in this forum?

    Anyway, to the OP, the 2006-2009 Prius the "5th Generation". If I have not mistaken, the markings on the disc should be as follows;

    86271-53028
    464210-2280
    DATA ver 13.1

    It is very important that it is the correct generation, or the system will not accept it (other generations will have a slightly different number than above). Also please note that the Prius nav is notorious for only accepting genuine DVDs (so don't even waste your time or money trying to pirate a disc or buying a 'copy'). Beware that many online sellers pass off extremely good-looking fakes for originals, which work in pretty much any other Toyota or Lexus, except the Prius. The tell-tale sign in the auction (aside from the < $100 price tag), is usually that the compatible vehicle list does NOT include the Prius.

    I have updated the disc in my 2006 a few times since I bought it, each time buying off eBay then selling my old disc to offset the cost. It has worked quite well to mitigate the outrageous prices the dealer charges, though I am currently on the hunt for a 13.1 disc, since I am several years behind now, at 9.1...

    I also just found the release notes (moments ago!) for 13.1, if you want to know some details on what has changed in the most recent update. Of course, if you are a couple years behind (like me), there are many other changes from other versions in between as well...

    http://www.lexusnavigation.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/2013_CY_GEN5_6_ReleaseNotes_v13.1.pdf

    If anyone knows a place to get a good deal on this disc, I'm all ears... ;-)

    To know what is the latest version, just look at the version. Now it is 13.1. Last year it was 12.1, get that?

    Sadly as it is, "version 13.1" comes with many many sub-versions for different models of Toyota, like Sienna, Camry. Even the sub-version which is printed on the surface of DVD can't give you a guarantee that it will work on your prius. Going to the dealer or a return-friendly ebay seller is a must.

    The 2007 year disk for my 2008 Prius NAV is v07.1 and is U32.

    U33 = 08.1 = 2008
    U34 = 09.1 = 2009
    U35 = 10.1 = 2010
    U36 = 11.1 = 2011
    U37 = 12.1 = 2012
    U38 = 13.1 = 2013

    My nav system is considered DVD Generation 5.

    For OP and others, not so much for this specific user: buy an OEM DVD, even used. Basically, you probably don't have a choice even if you did flirt with piracy. Copies, even good high quality copies very very likely won't work on your DVD player. The Prius' nav DVD drive is notoriously fickle and rejects non-OEM discs.

    That said, because Toyota's nav isn't particularly good IMO, I prefer a phone, a data plan, and turn-by-turn Google Maps.

    Disagree. The system works well. I drive on average 200 miles/day in WA state to 4-5 different locations each day. Once in awhile I need to cross-check with my Google system, but rarely. The convenience of the in-dash setup and the stable software (no apps constantly being "improved") gets me where I need to go quite reliably. True, the cartographic design is a bit dated but who cares, it works.

    I bought the latest 4 DVD Disc set for my 2008 Gen II recently. I'm very pleased with them and really haven't found them particularly wanting.
    They're an integral part of the iconic Gen II experience. Yes, I have smartphones I can use in an emergency if need be, but I actually prefer the quirky but nonetheless rather reliable Prius SATNAV :)

    I find the realtime traffic flow reporting and rerouting of Waze running on my smartphone outweighs the nostalgic experience of the in car NAV. I have used it when out of cell phone coverage area, but I've never been inspired to spend between $100 and $200 for an update DVD.

    Same here.

    My 2006 has a Nav DVD which is several years behind (running v9.1), but I also have my iPhone mounted on the vent running Waze which is what I rely on mostly with the traffic nightmare that is Toronto... I actually use both, usually Waze for the critical routing, and the Prius Nav zoomed out for a wider view of the map area (with or without route guidance).

    I think the traffic & accident awareness is a huge benefit of Waze, and am a very big fan of that app. Hard to believe it is free with virtually no ads, hard to believe how they make money. I would love if the app and the Prius were compatible with the new CarPlay protocol Apple recently launched, that would be incredible. :)

    Just to add a more recent data point to this thread.

    I just purchased a 16.1 DVD for my 2007 Prius from my local Toyota dealer.

    When I purchased a car from a friend in October 2018, it’s still had the original map DVD, so some of the maps in my local area were quite dated.

    The new update appears to add a number of new roads that have been built since 2007. I haven’t gone through and done any super detailed comparisons or anything, but it certainly looks like a big improvement in some of the areas of the Atlanta Metro.

    The 16.1 version, I assume, means 2016. If that is the case, it probably represents the very last DVD that you can buy for this particular Prius model.
