      Here's some background to help explain how the Toyota Prius fits in the Australian car market. Prices in Feb 2012 (in AUD)
      Prius "Base" $34,990
      Prius i-Tech $45,990
      On-road costs add about $2,800.
      BTW, those prices were $5000 and $7500 higher before April 2011!

      Honda Insight VTi $29,990 on-road
      Honda Insight VTi-L $33,490 on-road
      Australia has a FTA with Thailand, where many of Honda's cars for Australia are built.

      Toyota Australia also makes a Hybrid Camry for $36,990 and Hybrid Camry Luxury for $39,990. The Australian-built Hybrid Camry has minor differences to the US model.

      As at February 2012 average fuel prices per litre are:
      ULP 1.45 (91 RON) $5.50 Gallon (US)
      PULP 1.53 (95 RON) $5.80 Gallon (US)
      Diesel 1.50 $5.69 Gallon (US)
      LPG 0.76
      98 RON 1.58 $5.99 Gallon (US)

      If this all seems expensive... it is.
      BTW the average wage for all workers in Australia is AUD52,000 p.a. (It's about AUD67,000 for full-time workers.)
