Toyota today announced that the Prius PHV plug-in will have a dedicated online ordering system, with "Priority Registration" beginning this Friday, April 22 on Earth Day. Signing up for Toyota's Priority Registration gives you, the customer, first access to an online ordering system when it becomes available later this year. Anyone can register at http://toyota.com/plugin .
The new online ordering system will give buyers the freedom to configure their car right there in the web browser, select a dealership of choice, and then track the order through the production, distribution, and delivery process. It sounds like the system basically allows you to interact with a local dealership as much or as little as you want, which is a huge win for advanced consumers like those that purchase the Prius.
Toyota also announced that the Prius PHV Plug-In will first be sold in 15 states starting in the Spring of 2012: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Nationwide rollout of the Prius Plug In will not commence until 2013.
Side note: Did Toyota change the PHV's name back to just "Prius Plug-in"?
