Factory look gps on ebay + info on new Audiovox (Advent) HU

around $410 with shipping. I'm not sure which unit. It's a new seller. I don't know anything about the unit or seller. Just search E-Bay for Prius GPS. The selling price, without shipping, is $389.99.

I don' think I'm going to be the Guinea Pig.

They've finally moved into a real price range...

    EBAY Prius GPS DVD

    That's just another Rosen/Fly Audio/generic Chinese box.

At that price, it's very reasonable (knowing the limitations of the Chinese stuff). Just read the reviews of the FLY/Rosen - looks like it doesn't support Sat or HD radio.......

I decided against starting a new thread.

Audiovox is coming out with model specific HU, including one for the Prius. They will be Advent branded and marketed to new car dealers. The expected installed price will be around 2K. I have no idea how available the units will be and at what price.

SAT should work well. Audivox is responsible for Sirius and XM branded units.

The GPS software is Navmate. Looks like they're using Navteq maps, instead of the Tele-Atlas maps used by most of their products.

If the unit is DOA, or you think it's not a good/well made unit, you have 3 days to return it. You pay return shipping. Paypal will assist you if you follow the rules and the seller gives you an issue.

Otherwise it's not clear if the unit has any warranty. The cost to ship it (both ways) to China and the delay in getting your repaired unit back makes the value of any warranty questionable.

Certainly an attractive price point that might be worth a gamble if more information on installation, pros/cons compared ot Rosen, how warranty issues are resolved, customer support, etc was available.

I'd assume there won't be any support. Probably no effective warranty. You have 3 days to install and test the unit. Any issues you can get your money back.

This unit costs around $410. A Rosen (or Flyaudio, Advent, Myron & Davis) will cost more then double that. The increased cost gives you support, and warranty, through a US distributor.

You don't get both. You either pay a rock bottom price or pay extra and get support.

I didn't think Rosen/Fly had much support either (from previous posts).

Your support will need to come from other forums - like GpsPasSion Forums - since it's clearly a random Chinese knockoff - there is a lot of support there (for swapping GPS, customizing GPS (iGo, Garmin etc) etc etc....

If you are patient, it'll work pretty well - just read all the reviews here and there regarding Chinese 2DIN HUs......

Purchase a unit from an (authorized?) US dealer and you'll get a US warranty.

A poster on another board found his unit had issues after a few months. He sent it back to China for warranty service. He was told their techs said there was nothing wrong with the unit. Their policy is not to return working units which were sent in for warranty work nor issue a refund. He was out the cost of the unit and had no unit. I don't know if he was still within the credit card dispute deadline.

JMO but people buying a Chinese HU, directly from China or Hong Kong should probably assume they only have a DOA warranty.

Of course you can probably buy 2 generic units for the cost of a Rosen/FlyAudio etc from a US dealer.

It really depends on who you purchase from - I swapped my Chinese 2 DIN several times as they fixed issues. There are also many larger companies that offer very good support/warranty (EONON is a good example). As long as you are purchasing from someone reputable, I don't think it's a big issue. However, shipping is a big issue ($50 to send something to China)... The company I purchased from even refunded my return shipping....... YMMV...

That and the fact that this is a new seller - 1 Feedback. Not really sure how I feel about this.

I do work in the import industry and know that pieces like this probably all come from the same factory. The only difference would be the software. People seem to be split on the Rosen software - gets the job done? I guess the true question is what is warranty and tried/true known software worth? $400 is a bit steep to pay for peace of mind. Like prius2010II said - You could buy 2 of these for the same price as 1 Rosen/FA unit.

Keep in mind, there are two sets of software in these units - WinCE (which seems pretty generic - but allows you to run all kinds of different cool GPS software etc), and a proprietary one.

It seem on the proprietary side, most (including Rosen) start with the same basic GUI - then customize it a bit.

The proprietary software is not upgradeable except at the factory (China) - at least, I have not seen one device that allows it...

Most of the bugs that existed years ago have been ironed out, so these are stable devices - they just have some quirks (as has been reported many times in the many threads here and abroad)...

I'm not 100% sure but I think Flyaudio/Coagent/Caska is the same unit.

I think Foxway is a different Chinese HU which comes in a Prius specific model.

Audiovox (under the Advent brand) will be releasing a Prius specific HU. I wouldn't be surprised if it's an Audiovox design and not a generic HU.

I have no idea if Rosen is based on the Coagent HU, the Foxway unit or something completely different.

Got a picture of the rear of the unit from the seller.
Definitely different layout than the back of the Rosen, but maintains the plug/play connections.
    I'm still tempted..

It is definitely different design than CASKA, RoadRover production. The unit's sticker photo will be useful, if availbale from seller.
The seller with low eBay reputation can be risky, but price is competetive.
I have an experience with autodvdgps.com - they are polite and reliable. I had an issue with backup camera - they replaced it just for $5 postage contribution. But they are not a low margin seller, I think their offers are at good balance between service and price.

I' received the following email message from Motonavi, the ebay seller of the $389 unit. They would like to answer any questions we have on the unit but are having difficulty posting.. Any suggestions ?

Does he/she created a new account or used some old one? In case old one, the account/IP address can be locked for some suspicious activity in the past. Maybe admins will reply. Or try to contact Danny or efusco via PM.

My guess is that the guy was banned for posting three posts in a row on this thread that were just adverts, nothing more. The posts were deleted by the mods, I think. He posted with a username that was something like "soogoo" (I may have that wrong).

The manual isn't going to tell you that much. Some of us are curious as to which mfg. It doesn't look like Coagent or Rosen. The question is how does it work and how does it hold up. The seller is offering a 3 day return policy. You need to be prepared to install the unit the day you receive it and test it extensively. Particularly the I-Pod adapter. Run your car at different speeds and over bumps to see if there is anything lose. Carefully look at the unit to see if there are any signs it's a returned unit.

I suspect the unit either comes with no maps or pirated maps. You may need to secure better maps before you can test the GPS properly.

edited to add: If you want support by from Crutchfield. I'm surprised the ebay seller gave you as much support (copy of manual and picture of the back of the unit) as he did. You might ask him if the one year warranty is from the factory (if so what factory) or from him.

The price is about right for a generic Chinese HU. There doesn't seem to be many Prius specific units available. That's what makes this interesting.

A (non-ebay) seller has a unit which looks like the Caska/FlyAudio for around $350.

Rosen (and I think Flyaudio) are trying to selling to car dealers. The dealer hopes to sell aftermarket nav for about 2K installed. The distributor hopes to sell to the dealer for 800-1,000. I'll speculate that Audiovox (Advent) is going to wind up taking most of that market from them. I've looked at Advent's website. SAT radio support. Excellent install instructions. I'm not sure when the Prius model will be available but it will be worth a look.
