    Will have to try this mod for sure.

    I actually like the idea of having the camera triggered by the hazard lights as well. It's an extra safety measure. You can see what's coming up behind you during an emergency!

    use the right turn signal steady output to energize a relay to enterupt the left signal steady output and the hazard will trigger the camera aswell.

    Perhaps you might like to take a look at:

    In that post, the author has enabled both direct video input (no safety logo) and rear camera video input(with safety logo) for his 2012 Camry. The head unit and pin connections appear to be very similar to the 3rd Gen Prius.
    .
    To feed video via the actual head unit video input, we need to ground the External Device connect pin (Pin 25 on big connector). This enables the head unit to display the video coming into the video input (pin 13). Note that this video input is not the rear camera video input, which comes in on Pin 8 of another connector. To display video while the car is in motion, the parking brake signal (Pin 6 on small connector) coming into the head unit needs to be grounded.

    The only point I don't understand is that when I look at the EWD for my 2012 Prius that I downloaded from techinfo, it lists the exact same signals on the same pins, BUT THERE IS NO DESCRIPTION OF PIN 13 NOR ANY MENTION OF VIDEO INPUT. On the other hand there is no official video input in the Camry either.

    Can someone go a quick check to see if the same hack works in the 3rd gen Prius by inputting an NTSC composite video signal to pin 13 while grounding pin 25 of the touchscreen head unit?

    Very good find. However, this mod is a DIY so there's really nothing I can do for other owners. Also this mod looks to be for 2012+ and not for 2010-2011. The main problem is sourcing the factory pins and plugs if you want to make it plug and play. I couldn't get those plugs or else my overrides would be plug and play.

    It really sucks that there is no simple way to get factory plugs and connectors. I wonder how Crutchfield and other kit suppliers are able to do so.

    Can someone clarify the following two points regarding video input via the rear camera input by enabling the reverse signal:

    1) Does it work at any speed, or do we need to enable the VSS override hack for this to work at driving speed?

    2) If feeding video from a device like an iPod, does this hack allow sound via the stereo audio jack at the same time, or do we need to hear the audio from the iPod only?

    1, It works at any speed. VSS override is not necessary. However, without VSS override, the distance of the nav position will be off by twice the distance compared with VSS override. With VSS override, your position is stopped at the point where you first activate the video&VSS override. Without the VSS override, your position direction now heads backwards at the same speed of your actual vehicle. In 1 hour, with VSS override and at 60MPH, your position is off at about 61-62 miles. Without VSS override, your position will be off by 120 miles because you're telling the headunit that it's going in reverse.


    2, You can hook up the audio from the iPod to the 3.5MM Aux input. To watch the iPod video, switch to AUX for audio and activate the reverse wire. So yes, the audio will go through the head unit.

    Thanks cproaudio! That was a real gold mine of information and just what I was looking for! I am trying to figure out all the side effects of enabling video via rear cam before installing it myself.

    So if the nav position is off while playing a video via rear cam input(less with VSS override and more without), then does it mean that we cannot use Nav while playing a video? i.e. if I set the Nav to route to a location, and then start playing a video (by triggering the reveres signal), then while I am playing the video, the Nav will neither show my correct position, not be able to guide me to the correct turns?

    If the Prius Nav is not able to work correctly by feeding rear cam video, how about the direct input, e.g. those head units with DVD players? In their case, using one of the V#V override harnesses, will Nav routing still work correctly while playing a DVD?

    Yes, you can not use the navigation while hijacking the rear camera for video input. There's no way around it.
    I'm not 100% certain but I think the V#V can be installed on factory enabled DVD player to only enable the DVD playback while still have the navigation functional. However, you will not be able to enter address.

    Do you mean just grounding the parking brake input without changing VSS? There was a thread on that topic:

    This may work at slow speeds, but its not clear if it will work at speed. e.g. the person who discovered direct video input on the 2012 Camry (separate from rear cam video input) found out that the video blanked out once the vehicle starting moving fast. I pointed him to your VSS override harness :)

    I'm wondering if there is someone with the Prius factory DVD who can confirm that the DVD plays and Nav works while the car is driving at regular speed with just the parking brake grounded.

    Not safe thing to do, look turn your head to look behind you while moving forward. Whole point of side view mirrors was to eliminate this dangerous action.

    Blind spot detector, auto/off/on headlights and auto dimming mirrors should have been standard on a high tech car like the Prius.

    I'm revisiting this thread because I've just bought a 2014 Sienna with OEM blind spot monitor. I'll be making my version of the BSM to install on the new Sienna along with speedlock bypass. While I'm at it, I'm checking to see if anyone would be interested in a pre built unit? I would imagine that it would cost no more than $100 at the Priuschat Shop. Let me know if anyone is interested. If there's enough interest, it would be about May or June before it hits the Priuschat Shop. I'll have to work out all the details with Danny before production. I'll have to put together the installation manual as well but the basic rundown would be,
    power and ground at the cigarette lighter
    Turn signals at kickpanels
    reverse wire behind the stereo.
    Let me know what you guys think.

    I have the bsm and was thinking of getting a rear Electromagnetic sensor and hooking it up to the bsm so that way I would get the beeping from the stock stereo instead of a aftermarket speaker. Any suggestions or where to look on a schematic?

    I can tell you that nothing beats the factory Toyota BSM. it detects cross traffic while in reverse and doesn't pick up guard rails or parked cars while driving.

    3 beeps for cross traffic alert. constant beep for backup warning. The cross traffic alert is pretty bad nice person. It picked up joggers, bikers and skateboarders.

    Based on a few assumptions, I'd like to be able to trigger the backup cam without switching into reverse. If the backup cam is activated by power from the backup lights, and the camera display is activated by signals from the backup cam, it should be a simple matter to supply power to the camera circuit, with a diode to stop current from back-feeding into the backup lights circuit. Then I can combine the feeds of any other cameras into one input. Each camera would be activated by applying power to it. Simpler is better.
