I suppose I'm much more critical than most, the transition between EV and ICE feels like your bump starting your engine at forty miles per hr. It's minimal but I definitely notice it. If you live in a hilly or mountainous area the noise and racket as you described is annoying since it takes over for long stretches. As a direct comparison my Silverado which is a V8 drops 4 cyl. when it's in a minimal load scenario. That engine is totally seamless in transition and of course it goes right up passes and grades like they weren't there.
I can see how a Tesla or other high power EV would make a perfect high altitude vehicle. Completely unaffected by altitude, it should perform like it does at sea level. I only mention this because I was working in Colorado last fall, and noticed most of the trucks were turbo diesel. Our gas engined vehicles were gasping for air, traveling daily up Pikes Peak. Certainly not Prius territory!

Hmm, interesting. I find that as much attention as I pay to this vehicle, I have come to realize that most people would probably never even notice the initial transition between EV and ICE. I notice it but only because I'm hyper-aware. Again, under load, this changes, but if the ICE fires due to low charge, temperature, or because of overcharge on a descent, I find it to be almost un-noticeable.

Well, it's not like this vehicle encourages it - but what I mean is even what is necessary to maintain 70MPH on a hill. It's anything but refined.

Stark difference with my summer car that I just pulled out of storage that sings to 7000RPM and beyond. That motor begs to be rev'ed.

Yes, I drove at least a couple of the pre-production PIPs at various events years ago. The key point is that they didn't release the car until, IMO, it met the goal of maximum EV range/longevity while fitting the battery into the desired space. It isn't like they weren't able to project a couple of years out what this configuration would be.

That doesn't mean that there weren't other issues that needed to be tested with a battery that didn't fit. They needed to try out the user displays, user interface, the charging circuits, plenty of other things. The dual batteries in the initial prototypes -- maybe that was a good idea or not -- needed to be tested.

A commendable characteristic IMHO, something that one attains with age I think.o_O I find it makes life a lot easier not to sweat some of the things in life that many others find irksome for one reason or another...

I find that calling oneself "hyper-aware" or "more critical than most" is a thinly veiled comment that really means "I am more attuned than you" or I have better taste than you."

Camfab...so it sounds like you own a 2-mode hybrid truck? Also, the PiP would be an excellent car for the mountains because of all those times you are just wasting energy via braking on any descent.

Hyper aware means I'm impossibly tuned into every nuance of any car I drive or ride in. So yes you are correct I am more attuned than the vast majority of drivers. It has nothing to do with having better taste. If you felt that was my message, it certainly wasn't.

My truck is a four wheel drive V8 with cylinder deactivation. Unfortunately GM dropped the "hybrid" version of the Silverado.

Just so you understand where I'm coming from..... I've been building engines and Hot Rods for the last 30 years. I live, breath and sleep anything and everything that has an internal combustion engine. Electric motors are really interesting to me, and I'm really excited about tweaking one in the near future.

It certainly isn't said with any negative connotation like that. If anything it was the reverse where I feel like even though I am very aware of what the car's doing at any moment I don't find that transition to be very noticeable. That's a comment on myself, not on any others.

Everyone has their own things that they may notice more than others though so YMMV.

Interesting, because I rarely know when my engine is running or not, without looking at the HV process screen. I was out Saturday on EV mode, and when the range hit zero, I was expecting to hear and feel the engine start up. I could barely tell that it happened.
