My 2007 125,000 mi Gen2 suddenly has a blank screen. The dimmer has no effect. The car starts and drives well, everything else seems to work okay. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Looks like you got a broken screen. You can go on ebay and buy a used screen to replace. It's not that difficult to do this yourself, there should be some online guides if you google search. If you were to have this done at the dealer, it can run you hundreds of dollars or more to get a new screen.

If you plan to DIY, you might try removing the MFD and then removing and reinstalling the wiring harness connectors to see if that helps. You need to get the part number of the MFD anyway, if you plan to buy a used unit.

Also to add to Patrick's suggestion, I'm not sure the history of your car, if it has been in an accident/salvage/flooded vehicle, there may be other issues that are preventing it from working. If it has not been in an accident/salvage/flooded, then it should be just a failed MFD unit. Replacing it should fix the problem.

Thanks JC and Patrick. No chance it might be just a fuse? We did have a collision with a deer but it was 18 months ago and everything's been working fine up to now.

If the MFD is the only electrical unit that is not working then an open fuse is not likely. However you can check the following fuses:

    15A ECU-B
    7.5A ECU-IG
    7.5A ACC

Okay so I'm almost ready to replace the MFD but, new day, new problem. Today dash lights come on (speedometer cluster) but engine won't start and car doesn't move. Also I opened driver's side window (a foolish idea, in retrospect). It went down slowly and now won't go back up.
Does it sound like the 12V battery is on its way out?

The car just started fine on a jump start though the MFD is still dark. Is it likely to work when the battery is charged/replaced?

To me it sounds like you have more than one problem.

    IE:

    Failing MFD
    and
    Failing 12 volt battery.

I would suggest doing the 12 volt first and then looking into the MFD.

Needing a jump start is a indicator of a discharged battery. It would be a good idea to check the voltage of your battery and also make certain the charging system is working. If both of those are good, then I would check for a excessive amount of drain when in "Ignition OFF mode".

If you need help on testing the battery and charging system, there is a link in my signature below. Click on the first link you see there "Test the 12 volt battery". Run the test on the page that is linked. You can post the three values you see if you need help determining if the voltage is good or bad based on the test.

Hope this helps you and best of luck to you.

Thanks Ron. New battery ($147, free 2 day delivery), fairly easy install (broken vent duct floor bolt, clear water in the bottom of the battery well??!!) and after all's back together EVERYTHING, including the MFD, back to normal(y) .

congrats! I'm having a similar problem with my 2005. When your MFD went dark, would it still make a "beep" noise when you touch it in certain places, as if it were still working? That's what mine is doing, and I think my dashboard dimmer also doesn't seem to do anything either, always on bright.

So all you did was replace the 12v auxillary battery, eh? I put in the yellow optima deep cell last time I replaced it, but that was probably 3 or 4 (or 5?) yrs ago - maybe it is going bad...

No, I had no sound at all from the MFD and the new battery took care of everything. Good luck.
